I don't think there is an assigned purpose for anything, unless you believe in a higher power.
Nature in it self is so intertwined that not one thing has a purpose. Everything is interrelated. Everything is because of something else.
Nature is in fine balance. Each planet, star sun etc there are things that are because of something else.
Take for instance, if the carbon balance in the earth's atmosphere changed in a small degree the earth would blow up. I don't think that chance keeps nature in balance.......only a higher power can be part of all of the universe

well the sun provides us with a constant source of heat, and all of us are solar poowered, if you think about it, because we all eat and no matter what the cycle will come down to plants that get their energy from the sunlight. Besides providing our bodies with Vitamin D the entire planet would freeze and the races on it would be wiped-out without the sun.

The sun converts hydrogen into helium through thermonuclear reactions in its core, releasing large amounts of energy in the process (which gives us light and warmth). To answer your question though, the sun is like every other star, it serves no higher purpose that we know of.

Purpose infers intent.... if you think the sun was created FOR a purpose, that's different than the sun being the result of natural forces.

It has no inherent purpose, but without it, life on Earth would never have evolved. We create a purpose for it with solar hot water heating & electricity, or solar stills & cooking.

The purpose of the sun is to give life to animal and plant life through the process of oxygen expulsion, which facillitates photosynthesis in plants and respiration in animals and humans.

The sun is no more or less than an incident in the dynamics of an evolving universe.

The sun has no "purpose", it just is.
Do you mean what does it do t keep the earth the way it is?

what makes you think that everything centers around us,that the earth was made for us to live in and everything on it for us to exploit.
the sun just is , and it "just happened" that we were around to enjoy it's life giving properties.
God bless,
