I understand what you are talking about and I know you will find a few weird ones, but you never know. My aunt and uncle met online over a dating site. They got married a couple months later and their first son was just born a month ago. Keep in mind, my uncle had been through tons of girls, each not fit for him (he found them through friends, not the internet). Then he found his perfect match in every aspect. They are even both 6 ft tall lol!
And as I read all of the other answers, I disagree. My uncle is not a weirdo. He has a good job as a physical theripist and is definitely not ugly. He probably had no expectations for the site, but for him it worked. If you've no other ideas on finding someone, give it a try! If you find a match and want to know about him before you meet him, there are always those "don't date this guy" sites.

leave a good picture that you want to be on the back of a milk carton.
everyone on the internet who tries to get others to meet them has real problems in real life or they would not live their life off the internet, knowing that people are more vulnerable and easily groomed and led into false safety.
out of 10,000 people that meet on the internet, 2 may workout, 200 may get abused and or go missing.

Take it from Grandpa. Don't get personally involved with anyone from the internet. Few of these relationships work out, and the risks are far too great. And no, you and your net friend are not the exception.

well grl if you live in Cali then thats all that you'll get lol Cereal State..... No, u can never be sure online. Usually if someone seems too good to be true, it's because it is. Someone too eager or something is usually a weirdo.
