Nations go to 'war' for the same reasons the rest of us fight with our neighbors, relatives, and class mates. Political and religious leaders covet power and wealth; suffer from hubris; and have massive egos.
So, once they're in a position to do so, they pound their chests and play the "mine's bigger than yours" game. Virtually all wars have started because of religious, political, or covetous, greedy, emotional reasons. And the 'peons' in every warring society suffer while the egoists valiantly proclaim their pompous, useless justifications for going to war.
Case in point:
* Adolph Hitler convinced millions of his countrymen that Jews, gypsies and other "undesirebles" weren't deserving of being part of his "perfect race". Thus, he went to 'war' with the world so that - in his demented, egomaniacal mind - he could create a utopian society of Ayrian, blonde white people;
*The Bush family has had a personal vendetta against Saddam Hussein ever since George H.W. Bush was ridiculed, criticized and humiliated for not "finishing the job" and ousting Hussein during Desert Storm in the early 1990's. To enhance the Bush dynasty, it was politically expedient - and necessary - for George W. Bush to illegally and unconstitutionally invade Iraq, a sovereign nation that in no way threatened, provoked or attacked the U.S.A.
Bush's oil buddies coveted all the profit from cheap, easily-accessible OIL in Iraq, and were willing to create an atmosphere for 'war' at any cost - even the lives of 3,000 innocent people inside the World Trade Center buildings on 9-11-01; 675,000 Iraqi citizens; or 3,217 U.S. soldiers.
Next these greedheads will attack Iran for the very same reason: rich fields of easily-accessible OIL with which they can continue to feed America's dependency (instead of developing new energy alternatives).
No, war is NEVER justified. And these evil, insane people who gain positions of power will never convince normal, sane human beings that war brings peace. It's a fraud, a lie, and an out-and-out distortion of everything decent that humanity should stand for; war is an abomination - and someday all of the world's warriors, throughout history, will spend eternity in Hell for their twisted dementia that resulted in the deaths of so many millions of innocent people. May George W. Bush, Adolph Hitler, Idi Amin, Joseph Stalin, Saddam Hussein, and all the other murderous maniacs throughout history rot in Hell. -RKO-

Yes.

Historically war has been waged to either gain or protect territory, to defend the territory of an ally, or impose a philosophy or religion on other peoples.
Any given war can have any one or all of the above motivations depending on from whose perspective one views the conflict.
War is justified when you are attacked, (Pearl Harbor, 911) when your allies are attacked, (WWI, WWII, Korea, Desert Storm) when you are seeking freedom from an oppressor state, (American Revolution, & various other revolution throughout history)
Our Civil war for example had various justifications. The Confederacy felt they were seeking independance from the Union who they felt were infringing on their rights, The Union felt they were preserving the stability of the nation and along the way settling the slavery issue which was a cancer on our society.
Our current wars are more complex in their causes and justifications. First of all, we were attacked, but not by a nation state. The Afghan war is the reslult of the Bush Doctrine which states that if you harbor those who would attack the US you are as guilty as those who actually perpetrated the attack. The Iraq war is a bit more difficult, but can be justified by the percieved threat to us or to our allies. One can question whether the threat was real or immagined, but the fact remains that the former leadership of that nationstate voiced threats often and took military action against our troops in violation to cease fire aggreements made after the first gulf war. That state had used WMD's in the past and refused to allow verification of their compliance with terms of cease fire aggreements to eliminate all WMD's from their arsenal. The former leadership was clearly supporting acts of terrorism throughout the region. Decide for yourself whether or not there was sufficient justification for war. I believe there was.

Yes, all people live in some form of government, and it is the responsibility of the leaders of the government is to protect the lives of the people whether the threat is local or abroad, aggressive or perceived.
This does not mean that it is the right thing to do, but certainly justified.

Human killing human. How can it ever be right? It's like justifying murder, especially when innocent people get caught in the crossfire. Unfortunatly when one group of people start war for evil intentions people must defend themselves.
