What's the deal with the legality of file sharing? I've been hearing many mixed answers from friends. Some say it's legal for people to download but not to share. Some say P2P downloading and sharing is legal, and that the company is the illegal part. Which of these, if either, is right, and which is the safest file sharing network to use? Lime wire or something else. Also I have a Mac, not a Windows. And I would like to be able to put them on my Ipod.

It's not so much filesharing as much as filesharing copyrighted material without permission. File downloading and sharing is perfectly legit as long as the material is intended to be shared in such a manner.

With music for example, sharing it is not OK unless there is some prior agreement with the publisher/artist. Or movies. And so on.

P2P is just a method of communication and file transfer. It's no more illegal than the common client-server method used when you go surfing on the internet. The legal troubles come when you use P2P to share above non shareable material.

file sharing is itself legal. for example if you have heard of bittorrent. torrents are perfectly legal, you can create and seed and share anything of your own. whats illegal is the content that is in that torrent. it can help take the load of someones servers by hosting a torrent. World of Warcraft for instance uses a basic torrent client as their downloader. just as the technology behind other p2p apps like limewire, sharing anything like intellectual property of your own is fine. but when you add the new justin timberwolf. its not yours. though some will then argue that you bought it and that you can do anything you want with it... but you cant. stupid RIAA. most evil company on earth... actually they lost out to haliburtan. so... second worst company on earth. check it out... http://consumerist.com

i think that it's illegal when you download / share something which should have cost you money. the p2p programs are illegal if they know they're users are sharing copyrighted songs, etc.. but it's impossible to stop them (us)... really!

im not sure about this one, but ive got a logical answer...

limewire is ilegal, because people (who are downloading) are not selling it for a profit, its only sharing among 'friends'.
usualy wen something is copyrighted it means ur not alowd to distribute it to make a profit, and limewire is ultimately selling it to make a profit, coz they ARE making a profit, so its limewire thats being ilegal

just my opinion
