Use Winpatrol, it uses icons and plain English so you can see which programs you're affecting.

And Ccleaner has a Startup tab that will also stop programs loading on startup.

Otherwise, search on google.

The task manager will only stop tasks from running once you've booted, it won't stop them loading next time you start. You use msconfig for that if you're brave.

oooo be very careful!

you can go through each application by searching on the internet to see what you decide is necessary or not.

You should be aware that there may be applications that you can't see and that won't show up (i.e. hijacks) that may be slowing down your machine.
If you've suddenly noticed this in the last, say week or so, try system restore to a time before it started happening.
Best of luck

its not about the task manager.. what you have to do is go into the program and under the options.. it will say open on start up?.. and you should click No.. and then you shouldnt have a problem.. aol.. yahoo, msn, limewire.. stuff like that will automatically open in start up and will slow down ur computer!

You should have a look at 'msconfig'...

click start, then click run... type in 'msconfig' at the command prompt. In the window that appears, select the second last tab 'startup' and untick any applications that you do not want to load when windows starts.

Hi Gary

PC Magazine has an application that helps you determine what is necessary. The only downside is it isn't free but it is only $7.97 and well worth that.

Go here to read about it - http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1853852,00.asp

Here's a services guide that will walk you through it and help you decide which services you may want to disable. It also shows you how to set services to manual and validate which services you actually need.
