YES!!! Kobe can be the MVP this year...all he needs is the rest of his team to start playing like they did before they got paychecks to play. seriously though, the MVP is more than just a player who helps his team. the MVP should be the player, without whom, his team would not be anywhere near as successful as they are with him. this player would be more valuable to his team than any other player is to their team. this year, at this point, i would call that player Dirk Nowitski. Last year, i think it was Lebron. Kobe will always be in the race, but unfortunately, the voters base a lot of their decision on how successful the team is. most MVP's (if not all), play on a team that at least makes it out of the 1st round of playoffs. i would imagine that it helps the voters feel better about the choice they make. i don't agree that player is Nash...not this year. i agree that without Kobe, the Lakers are no better than Portland or Golden State or even the Bobcats...and they certainly aren't a playoff team. Nash is playing with 2 other guys (Stoudamire and Marion) who would have been all stars with or without him. no fair. Kobe and Lebron are playing with zero help. Dirk has help in the form of Josh Howard, but Jason Terry is no more an all star than is Lamar Oden or Leandro Barbosa. If the Lakers can move up in the playoff race from 6 to 5 (they're 7 games back of Houston), that would seriously improve Kobe's chances....but i doubt it would do much.

Kobe has no shot of being the MVP this season. If the lakers had 52+ wins by the end of the season, Bryant might have had a good shot at being the MVP. However, the award is usually given to a player on an elite team that is finals material. The Lakers are anything but a Finals team. At the rate they're going, they might not even be a playoff team. It's not about how many points you score. It's about bringing the best out of your teammates and making everyone better. Have you seen how lost the Suns play without Steve Nash? They play like a team that is heading for the lottery. Sure the same can be said with the Lakers playing without Bryant. However, the addition of Nash to the lineup makes the Suns a 60+wins team. The Lakers are merely a .500 ball club with Kobe in the lineup. To be an MVP, you have to have a bigger impact.

He'd have to hope the voters realize what the deranged fans on here don't, which is that he's played the entire season without one of these three guys on the floor: Lamar Odom (scoring option number 2), Luke Walton (scoring option number 3), and Kwame Brown (defensive stopper in the paint). Of course he has to take shots, Smush Parker's an idiot and nobody else can score. And if you read his quotes after those games, his mentality has certainly changed. I wouldn't put it past him, now that the Suns lost a couple and Dallas lost, to outshine the others in the last couple weeks and steal it. Doesn't matter tho really, because the Lakers are really gonna take everyone by surprise in the playoffs, so if Dirk/Steve wins MVP, it'll be all for naught.

Not a chance! Dirk and Nash are leading the pack because not only are their teams the best in the NBA right now but they both make their team better. Kobe is the lakers that's their identity. The Suns and the Mavs are a team thanks to Dirk and Nash. Dirk for MVP. GO MAVS!!!

i dont understand the first answer.
but i do understand what ur saying about kobe=mvp. he is definetly the most exciting player to watch and now with his team down and nearly dropping to the lowest position in the playoffs, kobe puts the lakers on his shoulders and drops 50 and 65 and puts two wins in a row to put the lakers back on track. now, nash won mvp last year because of his stats. 11 assist with 19 pts is sick and in my idea should deserve an mvp, and maybe even two. but definetley not three. i mean even if u put a ball hog like mike james of the t-wolves to start as the pg for the suns even he can get 11 assists. i dont see what so special of making passes to two all-stars big men game in and game out. dirk should definetley not win mvp. he is a disgrace to this league, the way he makes excuses in not winning the championship is just sickening to watch. he absolutley never plays defense and i never see him getting everyone involved in the game. kobe does everything, defense offense and everthing in between. and putting on a great show for the fans.

No. Nash and Nowitzki pass the ball around and they play on good teams. The Lakers suck and Kobe's a ball hog. I mean seriously, no one else in the NBA shoots the ball as much as he does. Last night Kobe shot the ball 35 times. The next highest shot total was Lamar Odom with 12. That's 3 times as many shots as anyone else on his team. Anybody could score 50 points if they shot the ball 35 times. Even Allen Iverson didn't shoot that much with the Sixers. Nash and Dirk are by far better all around players.

good point, because kobe bryant is arguably the best player in the NBA right now. He's a great defender, and even a better offensive threat, and can easily close out games all by himself. that being said, he's had his share of criticism of not distributing the ball. this year has been a better year for kobe, maybe his best, but because of the suns and mavericks status right now in the league, the mvp award will probably go to one of the respected leaders(dirk and nash) on those teams.

No, MVP's should help there team win. Since the Lakers are not a top team should take Kobe out of the running.

Would anyone really want him to win the MVP? If he was carrying his team to the playoffs and truly making the players around him better, then I would say yes. However, all I see is a frustrated player doing all he can to make himself look good on the stat sheet.

If you get suspended twice for hitting people in the face, then get caught and fined for elbowing somebody in the face, then youre not MVP. The Lakers also have no chance at winning in the playoffs.
