Ever since i unplugged it this morning, it won't shut off. even when it's not playing music or doing anything. usually the screen goes blank and it shuts off automatically. And when i press and hold the play/pause button, it STILL won't shut off. HELP! it's killing my battery!

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/ - you may need to reset your iPod.

I had the exact same problem w/my 30GB ipod video. For a while all I could do to turn it off was to put it on a docking station, for example my speakers I bought to hook my ipod up to. It also worked for me to plug it into my computer or wall outlet and it would turn off once it was finished charging. It really frustrated me because I couldn't take it anywhere w/me, like the gym.
But for some reason it just started turning off when I held down the play/pause button. I don't know what changed/fixed it. Mine may have been a freaky thing so...My Ipod automatically came when a 1 year warranty, so you may have to send it it to get it fixed if you're still under some kind of warranty.
Good luck on that one...My ipod pisses me off sometimes, lol.

I have the same problem now and then. Hold down the play button and the one above it...takes about 6-10 seconds but it should shut off.. Shutting off the normal way doesn't always work for me...not sure why, but it is super frustrating!!

reset your iPod! hold the play/pause button and menu button at the same time and keep it on hold until the apple symbol pops-up! then try turning it off again!
If it still has a problem either:
Restore your iPod
Repairment
or Get a new iPod

Hold the Menu button and the center button in for a while and it should reset, if still no luck which is unlikely try plugging it into the wall adapter or computer.
Don't worry nothing should get deleted if it resets

mine has done that before you can do one of two things:
1) if you have a case on it, that might not let you turn it off...weird i know. Just take the case off and try
2) your other option would be to just let the battery out, recharge, then see if it wont turn off

maybe you disconnected it from the computer while transferring songs like what i did... when it's off, connect it to the computer and transfer songs normally.. and maybe you have the new edition of iPod.. the one with curved sides? i hate it when it hangs... good luck
