Yes, you should get the game. It's one of the best games for the GC. Even if it's hard, if you die enough times, you can have the option to play in easy mode. It's not that tough. It's probably tougher than the previous RE games. If you find a typewriter and you have a ribbon with you, you can save. Save points varies from stage to stage. Put it this way, you can usually save a game before you go into a boss fight.

There is a "professional" mode which can be unlocked after
beating the main game once in normal mode.

On the GC, the next difficulty up from normal is professional. you said you beat the game 4 times and haven't unlocked professional? are you playing on normal mode when you beat it? to unlock professional mode in RE4 on the GC, you need to beat the regular game on normal once.
