Buy a portable hard drive that plugs into the USB port of your PC , they're fairly cheap nowadays and as soon as you plug it in XP just creates an extra drive letter in explorer. Copy the files you want to keep onto the hardrive and if anything happens to your main drive in the PC you have another copy to get them back from..

Another option would be to back up to DVD using a DVD writer and some burning software like nero, but if you have movies and lots of music on your PC its going to take a lot of disks.

Get an external hard drive, they attach via USB, I got a 300GB Seagate drive for about $170. Get some back up software - such as acronis true image. True image will back up as much or little of your system as you want to the external drive and you can configure it to do updates at a time frame of your choice. If you HD dies, your set, you can reload from the external drive.

You should also make CD / DVD backups of your music and pictures.

The fastest way would be to another HD either external or internal. The next best way would be to a CD.
