I have an axim x51. I love it, but am lost when it comes to using it on the internet. I've read about wi fi compact flash cards, but am still confused. What exactly do I need?

Well according to the specs at Dell it should have Wireless and bluetooth integrated into it. It uses 802.11b wireless which means you need a Wireless access point (AKA Router) that transmits using 802.11b. That Wireless AP should plug into your broadband gateway (AKA Modem).

Then it is only a matter of following the literature that cam with your Handheld to connect to the newly created Wireless Network. Be sure to secure it with 32 or 64-bit WEP so you don't get any unauthorized users on your network.

Here's a few links that will help you connect.

You have to set it to look for the network, then you have to set your security settings. & if your wifi network is setup to only allow certain connections, you will need to configure your wifi network to allow the axim's mac address > First link shows you how & has step by step instructions on how to connect to a network. The other links are for troubleshooting.
