The first test, taken at her first OB visit, will be to see if she has any bloodborne STDs, check her RH factor, and to check her hemoglobin for signs of anemia.

There will be another test taken if there are any abnormalities with the first.

If there is a difference in RH factors (between mother and father, thus creating the possibility that the baby could have an opposite RH factor than the mother), amniocentesis may be performed, and more blood will have to be taken for confirmation. If that is, in fact, the case, a series of shots will be given to her to prevent her body from rejecting the pregnancy.

The triple screening test will be given at about 17-21 weeks, testing for the possibility of Down Syndrome, anemia, and another abnormality (I'm sorry. I can't remember what that is). If that is abnormal, they'll want MORE blood.

Around 28 weeks, they will do the glucose tolerance test for gestational diabetes. They will make her drink some nasty sugar water and take blood an hour later.

Depending on what kind of pregnancy she has depends on how many additional times she may get stuck. Pregnancy is hardly a time to be squeamish about needles, though.

Good luck to her.

Well there are many blood tests that need to be taken in order to ensure the mother is safe and healthy. As well there are genetics tests to ensure the baby comes without any abnormalties. All the tests are very important. Some of these tests include blood count( if low you may need a blood transfusion during delivery), blood type, obviously hiv, and other tests to see if the mother has been exposed to different illnesses.
Finally tell your friend to get over a simple blood draw. pushing the baby out is going to be 10 times more pain. And speaking of, raising the kid for 20 years os way more work than she thinks. Please be focused on the bigger issues.

You don't give blood in the sense that you donate it. They take blood to make sure that mother and baby are doing ok. It doesn't really hurt. If she's afraid of needles what does she think birth is going to be like? There's not worming out of that one lol.

the fact is because she could have blood which would hurt the baby if u don't get it seen 2 for example i didn't want it but got it done any way cause i thought my blood was fine but turns out its not so luckily i got it seen 2 its always best 2 get it seen 2 even tho she doesn't like it but if it will help the baby in any way then she should put her fear behind her

I had 5 pregnancies, and hated needles, too :(

I believe some of the tests are find out if the child has down's, to even see if some one is pregnant, to see your iron level, to check for AIDS or other deseases, your blood type for in the case of loosin too much of blood later- may need a donor in the future or in labor...
hmmm that's all i can think of.Hope it helps.
Encourage your friend to think of the baby.
She will do fine.
In labor she may want to have pain relief which is usually given intreveniously.
Just try to breath, dont look at the procedure, and relax.

God sees her. He gave this great little life to her to care for, he's there. She'll be ok.

To screen for diseases and abnormalities in the mother.
To take glucose screening.

While its understandable she is scared of needles tell her if she cant handle getting blood drawn for necessary purposes for her child, she will have a difficult time going to the hospital for birth, not to mention dealing with life with a child.

Tell her to suck it up;its best for her baby.

I refused the triple screen with this baby, That tests for downs. Its not reliable..... it is wrong more then it is right so I refused to allow it. Its not like it would stop me from having the baby..... You do have to have a few blood tests but I have had way more urine tests lol. Those are no biggy I always have to pee.

They check your blood to see whether your blood is low and when that happens they write you out iron pills.
Also they check your potassium levels which i had a problem with while pregnant and if those levels go way down it is very dangerous (it can cause death)
They check you for everything to make sure your healthy.

To make sure that she isn't a diabetic! That is one heck of a reason. They want to make sure that the mom & baby are doing well. I am not sure what else they test for but that is one reason that your friend should give her blood. The doctor can tell her exactly what else they are testing for.

blood test are done because it is a way of detecting any problems that may be present, so they can catch them as early as possible so they can make sure the baby stays healthy! it is also used to test for downsydrome in the baby!
