I have this question for my language arts reading class, and my teacher makes her own homework. She gave us questions today for homework and you have to predict what will most likely happen next. The hard part is that the questions are open ended, not multiple choice. For example: The Storm began sudenly. The lightening lit up the sky and the thunder roared loudly. The electricity was blinking on and off quickly. Based on What you have read, what is your prediction?
And I put "I predict that the electricity will cut off due to the storm. Its questions like that. The one im talking about in particular goes like this.

Sarah began to cry, as she exited her father's vehicle. She slowly began to walk down the long and narrow sidewalk, as she entered the yellow, brick building facing in front of her. A man with a kind voice greeted her as she took her seat.

Based on what you have read, what is your prediction?

I thought her father dropped her off at an STD clinic.....

But saying that her father dropped her off at an STD clinic is not very school appropriate, buts thats the only thing I came up with so far! Can someone give me some creative Ideas to kinda get my brain pumping???

First, it's not asking what happened earlier (her father dropped her off). But you will have to make some assumptions as to where she was dropped off. You'll also have to consider her age, etc. It could easily have been that her father is dropping her off at her first day of kindergarden(she's 5 years old). It could also be that the building is a courthouse and she is going for divorce proceedings. Her father dropped her off because her Ex has the only car. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

Whatever assumptions you make will drive your prediction. I think that's what your teacher is trying to make you see. It also shows how vague our language can be.

Good luck,

Nick

It could be anything from kindergarden to the STD clinic. I would go with STD clinic because it shows more creativity. Is the teacher going to read them in front of the class or have you read them in front of the class then be prepared for backlash or try a safer aproach Ask your self why she was crying, was she physically abused...
Since the teacher is probably looking for creativity here I would go ahead and take that chance with the STD clinic, or ask the teacher if that would be an apporiate response to give if not ask the teacher to posiblly rethink the Assignment. If such answers would get her into trouble.
As far as being appropiate for high school it should be just fine depending upon area and attitudes of the parents and others...
Does the teacher want to take the risk of recieving similar answers?
would you dare to make a political prediction based on what I've said.??

I think maybe it's the girls first day at a new school and she doesn't want to be there. The man might be her new principal or new teacher. This scenario might be a little more approriate for school if you are worried about th STD one. Whatever you decide should be fine since it's you imagination. Hope this helped your brain juice start mixin'! Good luck! ( I first thought it might be her first day in kindergarten but I think the father would have walked her to her class and not just dropped her off since kindergarten is a milestone for most people.)

No man would greet anybody kindly at an STD clinic - get real.

How about this - she's going to a funeral for her mother, from whom her father is divorced.

Perhaps the man with the kind voice is her mother's new husband, but Sarah has never met him before and is terrified because the court has ordered that she can no longer live with her father but must stay with her mother and her new husband.

She walked into the dentist's office afraid of what he would do for her toothache.

Ditch the STD idea -- very bad.
I like your teacher's assignments. Very creative.

I like the kindergarten idea or starting a new school. But you know your teacher go with your interpretation on this one.

You can make her a kindergarten kid on her first day of school, that's politically correct. Or, have her going into an airline terminal to wait for her plane to ...
