Good question.
Lyrics when I know the song and the words to it so I can sing along out loud or in my mind.
The music when I'm not that familiar with the song.
But I can switch between the two, along with the beat/drums.
Have you ever noticed how when you're listening to a song, you can switch from listening to only the lyrics ignoring everything else, or listening to the music only and ignoring everything else, OR listen to the beat or other background sounds and ignore everything else?
What the ear can do!

Lyrics............. There is usually something to identify with the music just makes it better. Although I have read lyrics and not heard the music but then when I did I didn't like how then went together. The lyrics get you in tune with the song and artist.

Music, I only pay attention to the lyrics when I really like a song and want to sing to it.

I pay attention to both but I think that the lyrics are way more important because lyrics are the message that the artist wants people to hear.

the lyrics
a lot of times music is trying to get across a certain point (unless it's useless rap!)
the lyrics could be how the writter is feeling, how they think the world is like or isn't like if he did or didn't do a certain thing.
half the time the lyrics are even better than the actual music.!
