I want to know what binds people in being a unit. and could people really work as a unit?

It could also be ethnic, religious or other social backgrounds. They don't necessarily have to like each other or work together as a unit.

In sociology, a group is usually defined as a collection of humans or animals, who share certain characteristics, interact with one another, accept expectations and obligations as members of the group, and share a common identity. The group can take tasks, which would be unmanageable alone, divide the work and accomplish great things...together.

the group usually share interests like culture or subculture (think gothic or punk or perhaps religion) and have things in common like music or children or sport. They are generally a common age and sometimes sex.
