Does it make you sleepy or just relaxed?

Valerian will relax you and if you have a hard time sleeping it will help. If you take more than is recommended it may make you sleepy.

It really depends on how much and how you take it. In pill form it will relax you and if you take more it will make you sleepy. If you can get the actual root itself, use it to make tea and it works much better.

i definatelt felt more relaxed when using valerian and i believe this relaxed state helped me to sleep, after about 6 months i had recovered from my insomnia and now have good sleep patterns that keep me healthy

Yes, I have used it, Krys is right it is better to use the root. But you get yourself one ghastly smelling thing there. I found it good in the short term, but built up tolerance. Kava Kava was good as well but same issue. I have had good luck with amino acids, such as arginine, glutamine - you don't build up tolerance. 5-HTP is helpful too. I am also now taking calcium and magnesium.
