Football and soccer are actually the same thing. In North America it is called "soccer". But pretty much everywhere else in the world it is called football. Although it is not pronounced the same everywhere. Some pronunciations are football, futebol, futbol. But Soccer and football have the same rules and everything.
But if you're talking about the soccer with an oval ball, field goals, touchdowns and that whole bit, then they are completely different games. American football and european football are not the same game. Don't get confused by this.

During the late 19th century, American football and English football were establishing themselves as popular sports. Several years later, an Englishman (last name is Brown) coined the term "soccer" because he wanted the British version to stand on its own. American football went on to become as popular in the United States as English football has become in England.
The confusion begins with the fans of what is commonly marketed as soccer. There are many purists who stubbornly boast that we Americans don't know the difference. While that may be true of some people, most of us embrace soccer but not as much as we do American football. Both sports are popular in the States so we accept the different names. A country like England only needs one name since they only support one sport. So, they call it football.

they are both the same thing to some people but to others thier 2 different sports. Football in most countries is what America calls soccer. But it makes more sense to call Soccer Football seeing as in Football(soccer) you use your feet about 100% of the time. American Football 90 percent of the times one uses thier hands. so should American Football be called Handball????

Soccer is possibly a corruption of Association Football but the term "soccer" may date back to medieval times. There are a few theoris but non that are definative. Soccer is used in many countries where there own version of Football is prevelent, ie, USA, Australia and Ireland.

In the USA soccor is played with your feet, head, anything but your hands- Football is played with a oval ball and you do the same as soccer, try to get to your spot with the ball first, just in Football you plow your way thru however you can while people try to stop you any way they can, hands feet, head etc. round ball verses oval ball, just as violent, only soccer is usually violent AFTER the game Football, during.

Football....is exactly what it says it is.....skills using the foot with a ball...not as the americans call it Soccer....or do it for that matter, americans football is.....In padding chucking a ball about...not much skill in aiming, trying doing a beckham free kick and curling it 40yrds down a pitch in all weather. We have a game similar to the american football.....Rugby.....Our players play with no padding
