My guitar is too much to bring onto the plane, so is there anything portable to just practice the fingerings on the plane and elsewhere.

if you can, find a music store where you are going to vacation and rent a guitar.

If you cannot afford a travel guitar, there is a device (I think its called a Flexmaster, or something) that exercises each individual finger. If you listen to rock or metal (or anything else with a guitar), play air guitar with songs you do or do not know how to play. Pretend like you are holding a pick, and go through the motions. Even without a fretboard you can move each finger to a guitar solo. It doesn't beat the real thing, but its better than nothing!

Pal, I am going to have to say it.. PRACTICE but practice intelligently. Most of us have been there. I remember trying the lead piece for Stairway when i started , shoot I battled for ages. I got really frustrated until someone pointed out that I was not ready to attempt it. Me not ready.. I had spent weeks on it.? I was told to let it go, take something that I could master and do it well then progress to something more difficult and so on. You must read up on "finger robotics" especially for your leads... use your metronome. You have to crawl before you can run. Are you managing your plectrum correctly, is the action of your guitar correct, how do you hold your guitar, is your wrist at the right angle for fretting barre chords, is your thumb correctly placed on the neck, are you using the correct fingers for the chords, are you using all four finges when you do runs, etc. Don't laugh... these are very important technical issues that are recommended by highly skilled musos with years of experience. You sound like a serious player.. Do yourself a big favour, get a good teacher. All you need to get you on the road is a few good lessons and if that works for you .. carry on with them, that is if you can afford it. You can do it if you really want to. A teacher will be able to show you your mistakes. If you were in my neck of the woods I'd offer free lessons just to have a jamming partner.

They do make a little fretboard practice thing, but personally I don't think they would help very much. If you are going to be on vacation for a week or more, try renting a cheap guitar once you get to where you are going.

Wow it only takes 12 hours to fly around the world and you can't do without your guitar.

My partner and I have been playing for 12 years travelling around the country. I play rhythm guitar, and can't read a bit of music.

When we go downstairs to the music room for a practice, he plays, I sit (without the guitar) and mentally picture my fingers on the fret. Even if listening to music in the car my mind automatically goes to me playing and what my fingers are doing.

Try it .. all you have to do is know what key/chord the tune/song starts on. After doing it for awhile you will find that it's so easy to pick up any tune.

I don't think doing hand exercices will necessary make you a better guitar player. Instead you could use the time to listen to some new music. Try blues, jazz, or something that you normally don't listen to. If you have never listened to Eric Clapton, get some of his music and check it out to build your pool of influences. If you haven't heard BB King, Wes Montgomery, Carlos Santana, or any other great guitar player, use this opportunity to check them out and it will make you a better guitar player.

Uh. Make an...air guitar? Practice hand movements or a tune? I'm hopelessly shrugging right about now. Meh. Good luck, tho.

I don't play guitar but I don't think you can actually practice one without one with you.

but you could study the fundementals like chords and theory stuff. or how to read the music and rhythems. then you can come back and be like 'wOAh now all I need to know is how to finger this music!'

Honestly? No, there isn't. Unless you buy one of those practice fretboard thingies... EVen then, it's still not the same. I suppose you could strengthen your fingers, and stretch them everyday. :)
