Well look up a similar model at Home Depot or Lowe's website. Add 30% for pickup and delivery. Add another $200 for labor. Some municipalities will require a permit because of the gas connection. So there may be a charge for that plus handling.

If you do nothing, $500 to $800, should cover it. Unless its in a tight place, and the plumbing has to be replaced. Then you are talking important money.
I did the labor last month on one and received $85.00 show up plus an hrs pay of $60.00 I really robbed the fellow.
He had the new water heater and all the required new fittings, with in 3 feet of the old one, it was a walk out basement, I drove my truck with in 10 ft of the back door. There was a drain with in 18 inches of the old water heater. He had a friend that wanted the old water heater. All I did was disconnect, and reconnect. The city said it had to be done by a license plumber.

Pricing varies by region, city, size of the water heater, type, venting, brand, etc.
In the mid-west you can have a 40 gallon (top of the line brand) natural gas water heater installed for $700-800. complete. Add abaoaut $100-125 for a 50 gallon unit.

Prices vary by region. Plumbers, and everyone else, charge more in the city. Their pay is based on their skill level and cost of living. Other factors that affect price are the ease of access to your home (do you live in a city, where he'll have to fight traffic to get there?) and the simplicity of the job. I replaced one, myself, but I was able to buy a new unit that fit right in. It was the same height and the fittings all matched up. Also, does he have to discard the old unit, or bring the new one up or down a lot of stairs? With a worker like a plumber, you are not just paying for his time in your home. He has to figure his driving time and the vehicle and insurance costs. When you hire a handyman, you get a lower rate, but not someone who is licensed and insured. I'd go with the pro, in my house.

the price of installing a new heater should cost you about 2 hrs labor plus service call plus price of heater..I charge 65 dollars service call plus 35 dollars an hour labor...150 dollars is a good price for someone to do the work...this price depends on what people in your area charge for labor and calls....If the water heater costs say 400 dollars then the whole job shouldnt cost over 600 dollars if they quote you more than that ask for estimates from other plumbers in your area...I replaced one today for 150 dollars plus the price of the heater....took approximately 2 hours to do job including picking up heater on the way there.

if its easy access like in the garage 300 most plumbers overcharge for this because its a easy replace you can run into problems like rusted pipes or platform water damage.you can save money by disposing of the old one your self most dumps don't charge for this item but the plumber will charge you to haul it off
the best way to tell is if it only takes an hour no more then 300 and i i am only talking labor.
if he is there for hours and hours its a hard to access one or he ripping you off and or he does not know what he is doing
gas heaters can run upwards of 400
electric heaters 240

depending on where you live, a good rule of thumb is to price a heater at hd or lowes, and double the price, and you should be close. a decent mechanic will do the job in 2 hours with a 1 hour travel charge. minus the appliance this can be in the $100. per hour range. been doing it for 35 years
