Oh I love Gulzar's poetry. Read these lines by Gulzar-

Aao Phir Nazm Kahen
Phir Kisi Dard Ko Sahla Ke Suja Le Ankhen
Phir Kisi Dukhti Rag Se Chhua De Nashtar
Ya Kisi Bhooli Huee Raah Pe Mudkar
Ek Baar Naam Lekar Kisi Hamnam Ko Awaz Hi De Le
Phir Koi Nazm Kahen

Roz sahil pe khade hoke yahi dekha hai
Shaam ka pighla hua surkh-sunhari rogan
Roz matiyale-se paani mein yeh ghul jaata hai

Roz sahil pe khade hoke yahi socha hai
Mein jo pighali huee rangeen shafaq ka rogan
Ponchh loo haathon pe

Aur chpuke se ik baar kabhi
Tere gulnaar se rukhsaaron pe chhap se mal doon
Shaam ka pighala hua surkh-sunhari rogan

Born in Deena(Now in Pakistan) on 18th August, 1934. After partition he came to Delhi. Gulzar - aka Sampooran Singh began his film career as an assistant to Bimal Roy. He also worked with Hrishikesh Mukherjee in the beginning of his career. He started writing songs for films with Bimal da's Bandini. Mora Gora Ang Layee Le is supposed to be his first song. Although His first film to be released was Kabuli Wala, which also had some all time greats like Ganga aaye kahan se. Bandini and Kabuliwala were followed by Sannata, Biwi aur Makan, Do Dooni Chaar and most notable of all Khamoshi and various others during 60's.

After getting recognition as a sensitive lyricist, he started writing scripts and stories for films. Then with Mere Apne in 1971, He turned Director. Since then he has given us lots of beautiful, serious and funny moments through his movies. He has written stories for around 60 films and directed 17 movies, each one a masterpiece.

During 1987-1996 he went away from the seen as he did only 7 films as lyricist and 2 as director in the span of 10 years. During this period he did one of the most outstanding jobs for the small screen, the serial called Mirza Ghalib, a tribute to the legendary poet. Mirza Ghalib will remain one of the most memorable TV productions for its music, direction, dialouges and portrayel of MG by Naseeruddin Shah. 1996 saw Gulzar back in action, behind the camera for the making of Maachis, a candor document on terrorism in Punjab. The success of Maachis, got Gulzar back to the film industry. After Maachis, he teamed up with new breed of music directors like AR Rahman, Anu Malik, Jatin Lalit, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The magic of Dil Se's music won him yet another Filmfare award. His recent venture HU TU TU received critical acclaim. His next directional venture would be a Bangla film. Gulzar is back with his pen, in 2006 he has received best lyricist award at almost every major award function. and now writing lyrics for Omkara, Baat Pakki, Blue Umbrella, Guru, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and Jaaneman with a couple of untitled films. He has recently did a tele serial on Munshi Premchand's works titled Tehrir... Munshi Premchand ki, which was on air recently..

Although films gave him a mass recognition, Poetry always remained his first love. His first poetry collection Ek Boond Chaand was published in 1962. Roopa - Harper Collins has recently published his new poetry book Triveni. A collection of Gulzar poems titled "Raat, Chaand aur Mein" was also released recently, covering poems related to only Raat and Chaand.Another peotry collection Raat Pashmine ki has recently been published in Pakistan. The Indian version of Raat Pashmine Ki is released later on Roopa-Harper. Mera Kuchh Samaan and Chhaiyya Chhaiyya are the two song collections of gulzar.

Rajkamal Prakashan is presently compiling the script of gulzar saab's films in the form of a book. The series is titled "Manjarnaama" Till daate five manjarnaamas are out including Libaas, Hututu, Aandhi, Khushbu and Meera. A few more manjarnaamas would be available in coming time.

Last few years are the years of experimentation, where many young artists from different faculties worked with Gulzar and provided new expressions to his work. Some of the notable experiments include Kharaashein - a play by Salim Arif on Gulzar's short stories, Udaas Paani - an experimental music album by Abhishek Ray and, Gulzar's Poetry on Canvas by a young Painter Ajay Kumar Samir. Kharaashein has now been published in the form of a book on Radhakrishna Prakashan. Meghna Gulzar has recently come up with a biographical sketch of Gulzar saab in the form of a book titled "Because He Is...". Recently he penned the theme song "Lau se lau jalti rahe" for Olympic Torch Relay event at New Delhi and "Chal dilli chalein chalna hai" for Commonwealth Games to be held in New Delhi in 2010.

Gulzar has won 5 National Awards and 18 Filmfare Trophies. For details check Katra-Katra Section on this site. He has been awarded the SAHITYA AKADEMY AWARD in 2003 for his collection of short stories "Dhuaan". FILMFARE has honoured him with a LifeTime Achievement Award for his contribution to Hindi Cinema in 2002.

Government of India has conferred Gulzar saab with the National Honour of PADMABHUSHAN.

Long live Gulzar.

Just Married Music Arrived

The music of Just Married, Meghan Gulzar's second film as director was recently released. GuruThe album on T-Series features mostly funny, peppy and enjoyable numbers composed by Pritam and Lyrics by Papa gulzar ofc.. Since the theme of the film is marriage, most of the songs highlight various phases of marriage... and the pen of gulzar saab captures the aspects of marriages with lots of witty and interesting usages.. Each of the 5 songs (total 9 songs including remixes) has something of its own to provide to the listeners.. Gudgudee is fantastic in all aspect be it singing of Sunidhi or Pritam's composition or gulzar saab's writing ofc. Jagte raho is another song that stands out for its unique treatment in lyrics. Ram milaye jodi and Baat Pakki numbers are foot tapping and also captures the essence of Marriages in humor packed gulzar style, while 'Doha' provide emotional colors in the album. Meghna has once again proved that she does not compromise on music and the music of her films carries a strong bond with the script and characters. The album marks a perfact marriage of gulzar saab with 'music 2007 style' and a perfact marriage of the music album with the film..

Koi Baat Chale

Gulzar saab's Koi baat chalelatest albums with Jagjit Singh ji titled 'Koi Baat Chale' is out and available... The album was released on Sony-BMG last week.. The album features Ghazal, Poems (and for the first time Triveni's) composed by Jagjit Singh in the voice of Jagjit ji and recitation by Gulzar saab. A beautiful pack contains an audio CD, a lyric book (hindi and urdu script) and a special DVD (price 399) featuring the thoughts of gulzar saab and music video certainly adds value to the album.
Jaan-e-munThe Track listing is as below :

3. Sahma sahma daraa
4. Phoolo.n ki tarah
5. Kaaynaat chale

7. Hai lau zindagi
8. Teri soorat jo bhari (Triveni's)

Jaan-e-Mann

The audio of gulzar saab's latest film (as lyricist) is out and available. The album features from good to average numbers in terms of compositions.. The orchestra is grand while it works for a couple of songs but in a couple of songJaan-e-muns the grand orchestra works against the melody and the effect of a good song and composition gets reduced to an average one..

The poetry is surprisingly simpler than usual gulzar saab's songs... The best song of the album is "ajanabi shahar hai, ajanabi shaam hai... zindagi ajanabi.... kya tera naam hai..".. Sau dard and Hamko maaloom hai (While Sadhana Sargam sounds quite melodious in the song, the (too much of) orchestra at places reduces the listening effect to some extent.. )) are another two decent numbers (in Sau dard Anu's experimentation with Sonu's voice (to rhyme in the theme music) could sound interesting but to my ears it falls flat ) while Jaane ke Jaane na is another enjoyable number. Check out the word play of gulzar saab and ofc sonu-sukhwinder combo in the song.. The track listing is as below:

1. Humko Maloom Hai - Sonu Nigam & Sadhna Sargam
2. Jaane Ke Jaane Na - Sonu Nigam, Sukhwinder Singh & Krishna
3. Ajnabi Shehar - Sonu Nigam
4. Sau Dard - Sonu Nigam & Suzanne

Jha, some old photographs and also features details on some of his popular works.

"When HMV expressed a desire to do a compilation of my songs for my birthday I was skeptical. 'Not another anthology. Hasn't the public had enough of my compilations already?' But they were adamant.

"I'm glad I went along. What I like about 'Mera Kuch Samaan' is that it has been very beautifully produced and packaged" Gulzar saab said. "I hope 'Mera Kuch Samaan' strikes a chord in music listeners' hearts. To assume that today's generations have lost touch with poetry and music is unfair. Let's not make excuses for mediocrity. Didn't M.M. Kreem come up with some fine music in 'Paheli' recently?"

Ganga aaye kahan se
Mora gora ang layile
Tumhen zindagi ke ujaale mubarak
Bas ek chup si lagi hai
Hawaaon pe likh do
Ek tha bachpan
Tum pukar lo
Hamne dekhi hai un
Na jiyaa laage na
Jab bhi yue dil udaas hota hai
Meri jaan mujhe jaa na
Bole re papihara
Koi hota jisko apna
Musafir hoon yaaro
Tu jahan mile mujhe Dil dhoondhta hai
Tere bina zindagi se
O maajhi re
Naam gum jaayega
Ek akela is shahar me
Dhanno ki aankhon me
Dakiya daak laaya
Chand churake laya hoon
Aapki aankhon me kuchh
Aanewala pal
Kabhi kabhi sapna lagta
Hazaar raahein
Phir se aaiyo badra
Tujhse naraz nahin
Aye zindagi gale Mera kuchh saamaan
Yara seeli seeli
Dil hoom hoom kare
Sili hawa
Labon se choom lo
Chhod aaye hum
Chhaiyan chhaiyan
Ye lamha Filhaal
Aasman ke paar
Ye raat
Jaag ke kaati
Vatna ve

Kahte kahte Abhi na parda girao

Aah ko chahiye (Mirza Ghalib)

Kuchh Aur Nazmein

Gulzar saab's famous collection of poetry "Kuchh aur nazmein" which was published first time 25 years ago has now been published again. The second edition of "Kuchh aur nazmein" was recently released by Radhakrishna Prakashan first time after 1980. Gulzar saab. The collection features gulzar saab's nazms penned betwwen 1965 and 1979. Gulzar saab preface me likhte hain..

"Mera kitaab se lagaav nahin jaata
Shuru shuru me jab kitaabein chhapi thee to badee tasalli hoti thi ki Kaapiyaan, dairiyon aur kaagazon ke purzo par likhi nazmein kisi manjil ko pahunch gaii. Kitaab tak pahunchte hi lagta tha, nazmein apne ghar pahunch gayee. Phir jaise aadami ghar badalta hai, kuchh nazmein bhi apna ghar badalne lagee. ek kitaab se beh ke wo doosri kitaab me pahunch gayee. Main ek kitaab, doosri kitaab me isliye udelta rahaa ki wakt ke saath saath nazmein mere zehan me baar baar chhanti rahee. shuru shuru me jyada keh jaata tha. wakt ke saath samajh me aaya ki kam kahane me jyada taasur hai. Jyada kahane se maani dilute ho jaate hain.. 'Jaanam' apna pahla majmua, devnagri me dekhane ke liye 'ek boond chhand' chhapee. Jab vo chhani to mota peesa hua nikal gayaa aur maaki maada agli kitab me udel diya... "Kuchh aur nazmein"

Yahaan : Music released by gulzar

Yahaan is the latest album with gulzar saab's lyrics. Although the sound track features 8 songs, there are only two songs penned by gulzar saab for the film. The music is composed by Parinita fame Shantanu Moitra who has worked ealier with gulzar saab in Leela. The album starts with a typical romantic gulzarish number 'poochhe jo koi meri nishani, rang hina likhana'. Although the opening lines sounds similar to the stanza's of "Chupke se" of Saathiya, the song moves on in great style. "Kabhi kabhi aas paas chaand rahta hai
Kabhi kabhi aas paas shaam rahti hai" paints two color of Kashmir of today. While chaand represents the romanticism, shaam means to be the udaas part of Kashmir.. The remix version of this song is no match to the original and should not have been included in the album. Shreya Ghoshal presents a lively number "Urzu Urzu Durkut". After listening these two numbers one desires for more gulzar songs, which unfortunately are not present in the album.

PAHELI : A Class Apart

Amol Palekar's latest film 'Paheli' presents the poetry of gulzar saab and the soulful compositions of MM Kreem together for the first time. 'Paheli' is based on a Rajasthani folk tale of Sh. Vijay daan detha and features Shahrukh Khan and Raani Mukherjee in the lead.

The listenings of Paheli music brings a refreshing change.. It is not one of the Kaal Dhamaals, or Dhoom Booms or the suger coated sweetners like Kal ho na ho, K3G or Main Hoon Naa's that have dominated the music space in the recent years still its one of the most honest (and authentic to an extent) attempts to create Rajasthani folk music that suits to a hindi film. Gulzar saab's lyrics are one of the high points of the album and the lines are tightly bound to the script. The instrumental pieces, interludes in almost all the songs is are the highlights of the album. The musical pieces, the lyrics and the rendition all three departments stands out in their own regime and none of them outscores the other aspect.

MIRZA GHALIB - A BIOGRAPHICAL SCENARIO

Gulzar saab has recently completed his new book, a tribute to Mirza Ghalib titled "Mirza Ghalib - A Biographical Scenario". The book features the life and times of the legendary poet from eighteenth century in an unusual manner. The sketches are drawn straight from the works of ghalib. The scenes and stories are created from ghalib's poetry couplets and nazms. Rather than telling the historical story of his times, gulzar saab's narrative is woven around ghalib's couplets and the scenarios are created to explain why and how ghalib had written his magical couplets, ghazals and nazms. On the release of the book gulzar saab described ghalib as one of the greatest poets ever lived.

"In sheer imagery, every bit of which has been derived from the sights and sounds of India, he reigns supreme. I am but his humble servant," said Gulzar.

"His other servants have passed away, as has Ghalib, but I am still in his service."

"In every age, people will turn to him for words whenever they want to find words to express the deepest passions of their heart"

The book is published by Rupa & Co and priced Rs. 395 and USD 8.50 respectively.

Kharaashein

Kharaashein, a collage of Gulzar's literary creations, based on communal strife is on the floorboards. Kharaashein was premiered in July and was later played in many Theator festivals in Mumbai in September and November 2003 [including National theator Festival and Prithvi festival]...

Kharaashein includes Hilsa, a story about middle-class attitude to riots which focusses on a Bengali family. Forced to stay at home because of the violence, it becomes a day to celebrate with hilsa fish instead.

Khauff from Gulzar's books Raavi Par is a monologue about fear and its impact on the psyche of a normal person in anxiety. The third story Khuda Hafiz is a dramatisation of Samaresh Basu's Adab with Gulzar exploring the
relationships which evolve under the duress of a riot-afflicted situation.

The cast consists of Atul Kulkarni, Kishore Kadam, Vaishali Thakkar, Ganesh Yadav, Yashpal Sharma, Lubna Salim and Anoop Soni.

These stories are enacted with Tina Bopiah's paintings on the riots in the backdrop. Director Salim Arif and executive producer Manhar Gadhia want to make people aware that these things affect all of us and not just other people.
