I have been saying the same thing for years. There is going to be a toxic nightmare when a billion tons of toxic batteries need recycling.

Hopefully, the new batteries invented by America at M.I.T. will be used in hybrids.

Written by an idiot.

The point about the nickel mine. Notice that they do not include any environmental damage reports, they just say it's used to test moon rovers. Great. Winds could also be blowing smoke from somewhere else to cause that. There is no solid evidence presented that even comes close to proving that. BS argument.

As for energy costs, The Shipping for a hummer is much greater , seeing as most all of the parts are built overseas, not just the battery foam. The Prius is produced in the US, where most of the cars are sold.

Next, you have the idiotic 50% argument for the Assembly. This one may be true. However, The Prius will save much more then the production difference in it's operational lifetime. A hummer will waste much more the 50% of production energy.

In short, that article is BS. Complete and total sham.

But hey, it's in a student newspaper- what do you expect?

This article fails to compare the environmental damage of building a prius to building a hummer. It only points out how damaging it is to build a prius then says it costs more then a hummer. How much environmental damage is caused by building a hummer? Also, it doesn't take into effect the environmental damage of driving a hummer as opposed to driving a prius. Incomplete information.

Hybrid vehicles are far better for the enviroment, and gas mileage, than most alternatives.

The Hummer may get 10 mpg, A Prius gets 45. Take your pic.

Thats great....really

I think it funny how Prius sales fluctuate along with gas prices....yeah their all for saving the environment if it might same them money. And what happens whent he batteries are dead? What do we do with 1000s of Prius batteries? Ahh well leave that up to the next generation.....

I don't.
I drive a Dodge pick-up.
But I do use bio-diesel.

I knew that the Prius used nickel, but I didn't realize where Toyota got it from.

Not even going to bother looking. It's a student paper and based on my university experiences, articles that appear in student papers are as likely to be fictional or misrepresentational as those in the National Enquirer and it's ilk.

I recently had an accident with someone driving a Prius. Prius driver ran a red light and unfortunately got the worst of it from my Ford 150 pick up. That 50mpg did him jack S in that accident.

I just figure if you're going to drive something with a motorcycle engine in it - it might as well have the fun of actually being a motorcycle.

--- just had to put in my plug for the two-wheeled option :)

The prius looks lame.

It looks like a fat hippo from the back.
