You cannot simply do that with programs.
You would have to actually install them to that external drive.
When you install a program, it doesn't just go into a file that you can simply transfer. There is information written to a file called the "registry". This is like a guide for the operating system, it tells it where required files are located and how to execute them.
If you copy the program over, the registry will still point to the original location and the program will not work.

I have an external hard drive and I purchased Norton Ghost and transferred my entire "C" drive to my external drive as a backup. I love it

Most programs can't be just copied. You would have to ghost the entire C Drive.

cp -r /usr/local/bin/firefox /media/usb1/
