The teenage years are a time for trial and error (ie major experimenting). Most kids just try new things that are in their comfort zone (clothing, haircuts, dating, etc). Others find the need to rebel against rules (parents or law enforcement). Others try things such as premarital sex, drugs, alcohol, and even crimes or suicide. Being a teenager can be scary for both the teen and their families.
I don't think we are all screwed up. That is a very negative slant on life. I would suggest trying new things, but be safe about it. Talk with a trusted adult about what you can do to feel different. Maybe you can volunteer at a nursing home or an after school program for kids. That is different and gives you something new to do. Most of all do things safely.

yep unfortunately you don't see adults very often threatening to beat each other up. I guess it's because our hormones are changing and this causes major mood swings. There were people at school who liked me then hated me and liked etc. Teens love to experiment with sex, drugs and cars. There are responsibilities with each thing you have. The only way we can prove to adults we aren't whacked up is if we and our fellow students get along and act mature instead of talking trash. Also showing our parents that we are responsible is important as well. One major problem is Teens think H.S. is the real world. High School just prepares you for University or College. It's also a social experience which can be good and bad, the real world is much different than high school. In the real world you can no longer rely on you parents but you gotta pay bills, taxes and much more is needed to be done.

Being a teen is just adapting to being an adult in my eyes, Like adults they make mistakes...but teens mistakes are recognised more by adults as they are mistakes that they have already made, and in some cases are making!
You think about it, all the things people are saying about teenagers are happening with adults, depressed, pregnant before they are ready, on drugs, anorexic (size 0 that's happening), overweight, violent, suicidal... however i think that the attention is drawn more towards teenagers as there is more time to help resolve these types of problems before they get even worse.
They are not screweed up, its just life. X

I'm obsessed with school and doing better. I've been called arrogant but that's mostly b/c i know what i want to do, don't bother others, and hope for them to do the same.
I'm tired of all the steryotypes (like you mentioned) put on teenagers! I can't be treated like a normal person b/c i am under 18. I can't show my knowledge (the little i have lol) b/c i'll be called a smart mouth or the like, i can't do what i want to do b/c i absolutely don't know what i want (sarcasm), i'm responsible for my parents problems when i try to help them, i am stuck in school wasting my time when i could be doing better things (college, learning real things, living life (not negatively), etc!
I'm tired of being stuck in this same runt but it sure is a push to live life to the fullest when i make it out! i can't wait!
But most teenagers aren't bad! most adults won't agree, but i do think many problems of teenagers are caused by the steyotypes forced on us. really. we are the future of the world and we are treated like idiots that are a burden.
i just had a whole day of sitting in 50 min. classes w/o learning anything. it's sad and makes me so frustrated!!! uhh! but the steyotypes aren't usually true.
~hey! what was the book you were reading!?

Being a teenager is all about making your life what you want it to be.
Adults like to stereotype the teenager as rash, unthinking, and rebellious. And yes, we are. But not every teenager is "screwed up".
Being a teenager means that there are a lot of choices ahead of you. You make the choices that you want. Some of those choices may be "bad" choices and may make your life worse in the long run. Other choices are "good" and help you to succeed.
Sometimes the decisions are overwhelming and people find a way "out" of it ( i.e. have sex, do drugs, commit suicide, eat, stop eating, etc.). None of those choices are a way "out" of making decisions. They are decisions. Those are harmful decisions.
There are helpful decisions though. The ones that people don't tend to stereotype because the connotation of a stereotype is negative. A lot of people, as a way "out" of the stress of decision making read, play sports, draw, play an instrument, etc.
There are many possibilities. People do stereotype. But, being a teenager is about making choices. The right ones, or the wrong ones. Not every teen is on drugs, pregnant, depressed, or whatever. A lot of teens are "normal," so to speak. We're not all screwed up. But, we're not all perfect either. We make bad choices, but we make good ones too. Life is about choices.

I don't like it when people sterotype, espically about teenagers. We're not all depressed, pregnant, on drugs, anorexic, overweight, etc.
I'm 17 myself, and have gone through a lot myself. I've been down way too much, I personally have been through a lot. Sure I've been through whole self harm thing, that is just so hard to get out, espically as it's a mental health disorder. I've been suidical, people really do need help if they think that. I've never got professional help because fornately I've got a lot of person support myself & appericate it so much.
As you go through your teens there'll be so many highs & lows but remember to enjoy yourself, dont get into drugs, smoking & boozing; that is not the answer. Neither is self harm.

#1 Don't ever let anyone tell you you are screwed up. Being a teenager should be the best time of your life. It is the world around you that mkes things difficult. There are some teens and alot of grown-ups as well that can't handle what life dishes out. They have all those issues to.
Being a teen is about discovering yourself. Your likes and dislikes. Making good decisions but learning from the bad ones. experiencing things for the first time. It should be a time for you to enjoy not having the responsibilities that adults have.
#2 Don't be in hurry to grow up. if you ask any adult they will tell you that.
enjoy your youth!!!!!!!!!!!11

I'm 18. I'm not in the high school scene now for almost a year. But it was hard being in high school. People are always like oh it's so easy yada yada, well yea the work is easy. But the life isn't. It's like once you step into high school, you're no longer on American soil. It's an entirely new continent with monarchies, anarchy, communism, but hardly any where democract, all being used metaphorically of course. My sophomore year i was really shy and all my old friends weren't my friends when I moved back to my town, instead they were my enemies, crule girls with money, not good. I never drank, never did drugs, didn't sleep around, and for the most part had good grades. But you really can't compare the "real world" with high school, it's so much different.

Im not a teenager but I remember it very well. Its very hard and sadly some teens are depressed, pregnant on drugs etc. but there are so many teens that arent and even the ones that are are still good people! they are just learning how to make it in this crazy world just like everyone else. and that means making mistakes. lots of people in their 20's, 30's 40's and on up are depressed, pregnant, on drugs ...etc ....
being a teen is about learning from mistakes and hopefully get it together and find out about yourself and and what you want out of life. who said you were all screwed up? crazy talk. you all have a bright future!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alot of you are. (I'm 20, just got out of "that phase"). The problem is, there are many teens that are screwed up like you said, and they are the ones that get all the press. Think about it. You don't turn on the news and hear, "Today at Lincoln High School, Jenny Andrews did her homework and decided not to smoke weed." You hear about some idiot having a baby and trowing it in a dumpster, or how 40% of the kids in a school are HIV positive.
