You will know, you will have very strong menstrual cramp like pains, (far more worse)..but you'll get the contractions, then feel dull pressure down there as well...as soon as your pains are very close together then youll know your babys on its way!
your water doesnt have to necessarily break for you to know your in labor..mine never did until they had to break it for me! with all 3~..but it does happen alot..

My baby is 6 weeks old today. I didn't feel unusal in anyway. I didn't really have "nesting" or any of those type of signs. I woke up about 11pm and my mucus plug came out. I started having contractions about 20 minutes later. My water didn't break until I was dilated to a five, and the nurse actually broke it when she was examining me. I think everybody is so different. I was so worried I wouldn't know...but it makes sense when it i happening.

Trust me, you'll know. Watch for contractions that are timeable. Mine started at 10 minutes apart, then gradually worked their way down 1 minute every few hours. I went into the hospital when they were 5-3 minutes apart for about 45 minutes. By the time I got there I was 5 cm dilated.

you will just know. For me, I started having back pains the night before I went into "real" labor. I knew that it meant the baby was coming. I went out and grocery shopped to stock up the freezer for the next few weeks.
Talk to your OB about more specific symptoms and what signs she/he wants you to look for before you drive to the hospital. They will be able to tell you a lot.

Your water doesnt necessarily break. Most women have it broken at the hospital.
You will have abdomnal changes (loose stools) you may start feeling more cranky than usual and will start having mild contractions. Depending on how long they are apart you would call your hospital and see if they want you too come in or wait
