Okay we get 2 weeks paid vacation, I've already used 1 week and 3 days.

I'm going to hawaii for a week, I'm willing to take the week with out pay.

So how do I tell this to my boss?

You dont tell your boss. You request permission. Tell him you've got the opportunity to go to Hawaii the week of ________, and would like to use your 2 remaining vacation days and 3 days of unpaid leave.

He has the right to say no since you've used what's available to you.

First, you don't tell, you ask. Politely. You offer to take time without pay. it is not your boss's or the company's fault that you want to use more vacation days than you have available to you.

And don't be surprised if the boss tells you "no." Companies put limits on time off to prevent exactly this sort of scenario.

You DONT. As a boss myself you employees are always looking for a day off! It is so frustrating trying to get you employees to just come to work and do your job! We have a quota to meet and every time you need a day off you screw it up! Oh you poor ppl have it so rough. Well guess what you go home and chances are your done for the day and the poor owners have to take work home with them 24/7. My guess is you should just go to work like an adult!

As a boss, I'd want my employee to come in, ask, simply and quickly with no BS, and take up as little of my time with it as possible and not try to "work" me. Just realize the answer may be no - or yes - just do it.

Oh boy,you should have planned ahead on this one and saved your vacation. It all depends on if your boss is nice or not. Can someone else take over your duties or do they just sit there until you come back? Good Luck!

I think I'm in terrible need for a break, i've been really burned out the last few weeks, this break will help me recharge my batteries and come back much fresher.

I have a free ticket, too?

Uh - - -well, like duh - - I use my mouth when I talk. Do you have a different plan? No offense intended - just ask.
I totally agree with Amanda H
My opinion is it will make a big difference to your boss whether or not you are an exceptional employee or not and if you demand time off or request it in a non-confrontational way!!

Just be up front about it as much in advance as you can.
Your boss will appreciate it. It will permit your boss to arrange coverage.
