The phone is out of range. Nextel/ Sprint sucks like that...So instead of going straight to voice mail it searches for them.

It usually means that the cellular tower(s) are looking for the signal of the phone you are calling. It could be because the phone is in between cells or out of the area.

sounds like the person you're calling is out in space somewhere (or the desert or something like that)...
are other calls you're making getting through?

theyr either roaming or out of area

maybe a pager or your in roaming and it takes longer
