It's called being able to make sound judgments on who makes the roster, and preparing the players physically. They break down, especially pitchers, often enough even with 6-7 weeks of spring training. Here we are less than 2 weeks out and pitchers are just starting to go five innings or more. They have too much money invested in these guys to throw them out on the field without doing all they can to be sure they are ready to go!!

i believe spring training is so long because it protects players from injuries by letting them get into baseball shape. throwing, swinging, and everything else takes awhile for the body to get use to. besides it gives them a chance to hone their skills so the quality of the game is better. also, the money it brings to the communities that hold spring training no doubt plays a role.

The same reason the season is soooooooo ridiculously long. They could use to cut down on both. But then they probably wouldn't be able to pay those ridiculously high salaries!!

I know it seems like a long time away, but something that helps me, when i am looking forward to christmas, i look forward to my birthday, in february, then it comes faster, and that is what i am doing for baseball, in mid april i am going on vacation, so it seems like baseball season is coming faster, and the reaon why it is long, is to get the pitchers warmed up for the season

I believe to condition the players for a long season and to get them mentally prepared for the game.

It gives managers a chance to check out their top prospects and get everyone else ready for the season.

less than 2 weeks left, it does seem long if you're ready for the season, although you don't want your team's players to get hurt from not training enough.

Because they need time to get warmed up from the off season. Also, they need to see if anyone has improved enough to get to play

Oh please, it's not THAT long. Can you imagine having to wait all of March without ANY baseball? I'd rather have Spring Training to keep me occupied then having to sit around with NO baseball.

it's more about those Kooky pitchers than anything. Heck they even report early as it is and are the last to be ready, pitchers humph. Seriously though it is not that long.
