I just saw 300, and while it was an amazing motion picture it reminded me of our current day political situation. Near the end the council hears the queen about why they need to send all of Sparta's army to go assist with slaughtering the persian hordes.
The council member (i forget his name, the one who is the traitor) represents the liberal, he is telling the council "the king provoked an unneccesary war" (even though persia was already on their beaches about to take them over) and that "he has marched 300 of our finest men to their deaths" (geeze, reminds me of all the libs who say "Bush is marching our children to their deaths) and in the end this council member is shown to be a traitor who really only had his own agenda in mind.

Does anyone else see this paralell? I think that the Spartan king and his men (Bush and the VOLUNTEER army) are one in the same, because the liberals are saying withdrawl, no support, you are marching our men to their deaths for your own agenda.

Also id like to mention that if the council did not eventually approve to provide reinforcements we would all be speaking arabic today. All of Greece would have fallen and Western civilization would have been exterminated.

Now that we are at the same crossroads, shoudl we really take the later aproach?

"we cant win this "war" because its an occupation "

*smashes head into wall*
Sigh. Although I dont think I even need to answer that, can you not see that we are basicly fighting the SAME war that was faught then against the same enemy?

If this battle happened in 2007, the liberals would be protesting for "understanding" and acceptance of the persians beliefe that leviticus or whatever his name was was ACTUALLY A GOD, when in fact he was just a black dude pierced up like a 14 year old Goth kid.

Excellent point. I too saw 300 and I thought of that too. Yes Liberals keep saying that we can't win, to pull out, to leave, that they will give no support, so they rather have the terrorist at our doorsteps killing our civilians than fighting them there and stop them.

I had never looked at it that way. Guess I was too busy being grossed out! It sure was a graphic movie to put things politely! WOW....
I think that you can easily compare that movie with not only today's political situation but also to the world situation.
When the hunchback walked into the tent of the Persian god and all around him were orgys and the devil himself (the goat). I have a feeling if we were all able to visualize demons in this world that we would see this sort of stuff happening all around us.
While I have grown to not support what our president is doing, more so from a Christian standpoint and less from a political and economical standpoint (although I am not happy on these fronts either) I completely disagree with anyone who thinks that he has done nothing good in Iraq. I don't know what is going on in his head (his agenda) but I do know that I have seen (maybe what he wants me to see) so many Iraqi people thanking us for helping them.
I won't begin to delude myself though into agreeing that he is even a good president...or has done a decent job. He is not the Christian man that he claims to be.

The situations are certainly different. Historically as well as in the movie, Xerxes had a massive army and there was no question he was going ot invade.
Because Spartan law forbade him from taking his army he took this small group to intercept the Persian army and give time for a navy that was on its way to engage Xerxes navy. I forget the name of that battle.

Remember this movie goes right along with Frank Millers graphic novel ( which he made before Bush was even president ) and the movie is pretty close to historically accurate. Although in the real battle the 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians they also had a few thousand greek allies mostly in the form of militia men who had been gathered up.

Anyway, I think its silly to try and create a parallel.

If you are curious about the circumstances that this movie is about the wiki write up seems pretty thorough for the most part.

1. Please read more history.

2. In order to better understand Spartan society and their "freedom" a little better, you should run their REAL rite of manhood: run the gauntlet, where people systematically beat you with whips, clubs, and switches as you attempt to get past them down what amount to more than a city block UP STAIRS. If you fall down, they beat you to death, just like they throw their unwanted babies off of cliffs. Then again, you sound like the sort of sycophant that would make a better Spartan slave, kept around in your own subservient communities until your masters felt like engaging in target practice.

Parallel, my @ss. What was with all that crap about "freedom" from slave owners? Ever study Spartan property right laws. Yeah, that's kind of cute too. You see, as long as I can bash your head in, as far as Sparta is concerned, your property is mine.

3. There were NO LIBERALS in Spartan society, only the corrupt republicans that take bribes and embezzle... the kind of pansies that are so worried they might lose that they hedge their bets against their own friends. The liberals were living in Athens, which actually ended up fighting the decisive naval battle that led to Greek victory. Without that naval victory, Xerxes's fleet could have once again caught the Spartans in a strategic pincer move and gained the upper hand.

4. Spartans would NEVER convert to Christianity.

5. As for parallels in current history, aside from movie directors with political agendas, you may as well be comparing the attempt of the Mongols to invade Japan. There are common elements in ALL cultural conflicts, but this movie was trying too hard to be a metaphor for something that doesn't even exist today nor did it exist exactly as portrayed back then. For example, you're saying Bush is fighting on the front lines at the head of his troops? Now I know you weren't saying that. What an insult to Leonidas. He must be rolling in his grave for comparing him to a man that never fought in a war in his life, let alone taken a sound beating.

Glorifying a society that owned and slaughtered its slaves... and you would call yourself a member of the party of Lincoln??? For shame!

Also, you're conveniently forgetting that the Spartans had not mysteriously conquered the rest of Europe, nor did they ever do so.

The movie 300 is entertainment and not much more.

I could argue that this movie is an American Imperialist propaganda film where America, Greece and Israel join forces to re-establish the Byzantine Empire in the same footprint as the Ottoman Empire (including today's Iraq and Iran) and adding Afghanstan (which was conquered by Alexander the Great and no one else since). What am I thinking?

I can't wait to see this movie.
Oh yes I can. It will be on DVD soon.

You are right that Americans cannot see their own demise coming. We keep calling Islam a peace full religion. BS I realize that Christians started this problem during the crusades but how many centuries have to go by before we can live peacefully again?

Barak Hussein Obama is definately not Sparticus. In fact he is the Persian in Sparta, trying to get Sparta to surrender.

It's a movie based on a comic book based on a 2400 year old battle.
It has no meaning in relation to current events.

This is as pitiful as the Iranians whining about this.

You and them all need to move out of your moms basements.
