i think partners,husband/wife should look at everything as both. i mean their using everything in the house, such as utilities, mortgage, and food. it's not fair to throw one bill on one person, and not the same bill on both.

I'm assuming Jack and Jim are the same person LOL. If not then Mary has double the help!
My man and I we split the mortgage. I pay the utilities and the cable. Only because he pays the truck and motorcycle and I pay for the car. He pays the phones and the car insurance. But I usually do the shopping and if I need the help he is there with his wallet.

Why don't you give yourselves some sort of allowance each week for things that are personal- that way no one is getting more or less of the pie. You know.. the number one reason why people get divorced in this country is over finances? Make things as simple as possible and make it clear what is who's responsibility- like you said.. Mary gets the mortgage and Jack pays the utilities.

We worked out how much it all costs an average month, and i give half that amount to The Man to pay the bills. If there is something extra, like car tax, he`ll tell me if he needs anymore.
Shopping we just kind of pay for without thinking about it! If i`ve got money I`ll pay, if not he pays. We dont really discuss it.

When we first moved in with each other, we had our own accounts plus a joint account into which we would both deposit $ for rent, bills, groceries, etc...
I ended up quitting my job to return to college, during which time my hubby paid all the bills.
And now, he pays the rent, phone/cable/internet bills and any personal expenses (loan, visa, rrsp). I pay for the groceries, insurance and my personal expenses (student loan, visa, rrsp).
We share any and all expenses related to our kids, such as their clothing, toys, resp's, etc....
So far this works the best and we take turns treating each other when we go out somewhere like to dinner or a movie.

Both of our checks go into one account and I pay all bills and we when either of us need something we ask. Which works great cause that way I know all the bills are paid and on time.

I dont understand why anyone feels the need to even ask such a question. If you are married or living together as married, then there should be no question of who pays what, one home, one electric bill etc, one bank account and so on.....Its beyond my comprehension why there is a division here

My wife and I maintained our original separate current accounts before we got married and opened a new joint account where all direct debits and standing orders related to our joint life come from.
We then pay a certain amount of money towards the joint account.
Whatever is left in our individual accounts, we're free to spend on our individual needs or whichever way we like it.
This way, we're still able to maintain our individuality, and still manage a certain level of autonomy.

He gives me his Check each week and along with mine I pay the Bills. If there is some left over after giving him an Allowance and Myself enough to run on till the next week, I will put it in OUR savings. My Fiance hates handling the Finances so I do it.
