Anti-spyware software can add another level of support which can block spyware being put onto your computer.
So they both have a place in blocking unauthorised attempts to access your computer from the internet.
So both if you meant anti-spyware software.

Buy a hardware router/firewall/switch combination with network address translation (NAT).

It's a firewall..without one you could run into all sorts of problems.
