my father in law is a dj and uses his laptop and an amplifier to play his music. he currently uses windows media player 10 but gets a lot of unwanted background noise. is there a media player that will give better sound quality at such loud volumes or should he just use a higher bitrate for his tracks?

it's not just a question of media player.

firstly you need to make sure they are top quality mp3/wav file recordings.

secondly make sure you have a good/professional sound card.

thirdly, get really good cables from PC/MAC to mixer/speakers

fourthly, get a wicked digital mixer- if you are using one

fifthly, get fantastic speakers!

good luck dude, there are few things more satisfying :P

I get a much louder and clearer sound when i use winamp. It allows you to use more controls for adjusting the base treble etc. Plus the fact that it is by far the best media player around for more reasons than i can be bothered to explain.

It's his soundcard. He should know this if he's a computer-based DJ. Also, using a digital connection will eliminate hiss. Alot of unwanted noise travels through analog wiring.
