That is an excellent question (as are all your questions) I hope someone from the Christian Conservative movement can give you an answer, as I would like to know myself.
I will answer just to amuse myself anyway. My guess is this: to brain wash the youth in the U.S and become an "army of god" very similar to the tactics of terrorists abroad. I think the goal is to infiltrate the government with this fanaticism and once that happens we can return to the good ol days of witch hunts where thousands of people will be murdered by fanatics crying and speaking in tongues in the name of Jesus..
BUT hopefully some great scientific discovery will help shed some serious rational thought on this growing cult before it comes to this grim reality.
ADD: thanks Laura that was really insightful especially how much "alternative lifestyles" seem to be a threat to your beliefs. I look at my answer above and think maybe I am being a little bit of jerk and then I realize that intolerance is the foundation of Christianity and therefore invites a critical challenge.

Oh, gosh...I would suppose that depends on which Christian Conservatives you talk to. I am not certain what you are referring to by 'old wedge issues'. My focus is strictly on family values, such as abstinence of pre-teen & teen sexual encounters, the cessation of public porn, and for certain...much better maintenance of the movement of pedofiles around this nation.
By statistics there are thousands, upon thousands who are eluding being tracked by law enforcement. These people (men and women) move often and do not re-register with their new addresses. Until they do, children will always be at risk.
As far as 'teachers' within the school system, it is my sincere belief that they should all be given a rigorous and mandatory psychological screening before their teaching license is issued. As you are probably aware from all the news reports, the seduction by teachers onto students has gotten way out of hand. Many have complained about the clergy; however, as parents we need to look in our own back yards, so to speak. We should also demand that the Borad of Education quit focusing on teaching about 'alternative lifestyles' and start concentrating on WHO will be teaching our children. This needs to be a must.
As far as abortion, I'm strictly against it; however, the women of this country (especially teens) should be counseled in a mandatory counseling session with a qualified physician, be it an OBGYN or their family doctor. I do not feel it is right for anyone but the parents or immediate guardian (must be a relative or foster parent) should have the right to take an underage teen across State lines or even accompany them on this trip. Since I have seen forensic evidence from the 7th week of pregnancy forward, when that heartbeat is there, and they use magnification, there is development of the hands, arms feet and even the genital area, even though only half the size of the tip of the index finger, it's still a body that is formed. The microscope does NOT lie, and this miracle is not just a clump of cells.
Also, and lastly...I don't feel that it is right for people to force the Christian churches to accept the alternative lifestyles and insist that we condone that lifestyle. It is against our belief and the Federal Government as well as judges should not have the authority to insist that we do. There is the 'seperation of church and State' for this very reason. Neither government, nor activist have the right to change or inhibit the rights of the First Amendment for Christians. The government has no place to interfer. The Christan Churches have not been degsignated for a national or international church and should not be brought to bare the responsibility of accepting something that is against our belief. Just as the Amish were never drafted into the military service because of their belief that killing is wrong, then the Christian Churches should also be exempt from accepting alternative lifestyles.

The reason you don't see a focus, is it depends on the conservative Christian and the movement he/she is focusing on.
The issues are older than you or I. This is why it may seem old. It may also seem like regurgitation, but it is ok to hold the same beliefs on issues, as your grandparents.

the focus is to bring back morals and identity to this nation ... unfortunately they are doing it the wrong way. By singling out one particular point they bring the focus towards their lack of tolerance and their biased view on issues like abortion, gay marriage etc.
It is a fact that we all have lost it ... i mean really look around ... violence everywhere, games, videos, movies, streets and in our schools ... porn industry running up high ... alcohol consumption to its highest level especially with teens ... lack of respect, lack of good education, falling of the family cell etc .... the list is LONG of how this nation is turning sour by the years. We have nothing left but our names of United States citizens ... but the United States no longer stands for what it use to be ... freedom, rights, liberties, opportunities.
It has become a mess of governmental involvement in all aspect of our lives and a magma of liberal association fighting every single one of them by outrageously over estimating what should be the citizens rights.

You may laugh, but I'm not kidding when I say world domination. They have no respect for other cultures and the beliefs that come with them whatsoever. Also, they would like to see a certain amount of catstrophe in Israel because they think it will set off something of an apocalyptic nature.
Yeah, they're a nice, sweet group of folks.
