Back when Naismith created the game a basket was used as a goal. Long story short, that was aggravating so they switched to what is now known as the rim and net

there is a net for 2 reasons, which coincide.

1) if you put a net on a rim, it kind of resembles a basket. It is easier to make a goal, and a lot less rough on the ball

2)i the reason that everyone else got correct: You can tell better when it goes through

it also helps prevent injuries or erratic ball movement

It's a combination of telling whether the ball goes in, and to make sure it falls straight rather than bounce somewhere random. It allows for control of the ball, and minimizes injury to the minimization of erratic ball movement(preventing it from hitting a person in the face after it passes through the rim). Believe it or not a ball from the three point line, rushing through the rim hurts. The cousin got a bloody nose from his ghetto hoop.

To give people excuses when they shoot airballs.

To make the audience when listening to games know when the announcers is a moron and doesn't say if he made the FT. You can hear the Net wisping.

To look cool. Ever notice how crappy rims look without nets?

Plus the Nets plain suck. Let's go Knicks.

It is used to make sure the ball doesn't go flying. Nobdy cares if the hoop looks like a basket. If there is a net the ball won't rocket into the stands.

You mean to say Vince Carter and Jason Kidd and their teammates are being hanged on the rim by the opposing team?
