Yes, but you need to confirm this w/ your service provider.

From the phrasing of your question, it sounds like you live in a apartment that is serviced by a 3rd party company, not DirecTV. If you do purchase your own box, make sure you can answer the following questions:
1 - Do you have an HDTV?
2 - Do you want to record shows in HD?
3 - Do you want to use DirecTV DVR or TiVo provided by DirecTV?
4 - If you use TiVo, do you have a phone line to connect to the box to receive updates?

Once you answer the above and get your box, contact your service provider and they'll schedule an appointment to install your new receiver.

u can but it'll cost u. it's better to pay a monthly fee of $5.00 to $6.00 that only u dont plan to keep the receivers but it u want to keep them then ur best choice will be to buy them at any electronicd store or ebay. dish network has the best deals. even on dvr receivers. both directv and dish are great and cheaper than cable. good luck!!!
