*smile* It's pretty close to the bone as the phalanx (plural phalanges) is the word doctors use to describe the small sections that make up the finger (proximal - close, distal - further away and middle phalanges)
I would only consider giving the finger to a phalanx of heavily armed soldiers if they were dressed in traditional athenian or spartan garb and armed likewise (big shield and spear) and I was able to run away from them real quick! :-)

Too close to the bone, and too close to home...My son is in the Army, I spend a lot of time around soldiers, and wouldn't dream of giving the finger to them, whether they are in a square or all in a straight line......
