My engine light came on a few months ago and I took it in right away. At the time my car was running fine and thought is was just an electrical malfunction. I was told that I need a whole new engine that would cost me close to $6,000. My car is only 4 years old and I have always taken good care of it. I took it to two different places to make sure I wasn't being ripped off and was told the same by both. Now my car shakes when I start it and struggles to stay on sometimes. If there is anything I can do to fix this without having to replace the entire engine I would love to know. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

it depends why it is misfiring. it could be misfiring for several different reasons, a bad injector, poor ignition system(wires, plugs, coils ect.), or it may have a cylinder that has bad compression. Depending on why it misfires would depend on the best course of action.

If it was a compression issue in # 3 that would be bad news for your engine.. Either a valve, valve spring, or rocker arm is broken or there is something wrong with the piston, a hole or crack in it or broken rings. You could check by draining the oil, taking out #3's spark plug and squirting a bunch of gas like 8-10 ounces in the spark plug hole. If it comes out the oil pan drain then it's time for a new engine. If it just drips out over time (like a few hours) then I would take off the rocker cover (Pretty easy) and look at the springs and valve stem. The spring should have no broken coils and the valve and rocker arm should all be the same height and condition as the others. If the gas leaks slowly and all the springs and rockers look good then your valve is shot and you'd need to rebuild your engine. consider a replacement. If it is only a spring or a rocker it will be not too expensive to fix.. Just don't let the valve fall into the cylinder when you take the spring retainer off! It was good to get a second opinion. It could be an ignition problem too but if you have two shops telling you the same thing It's a safe bet that it is mechanical...not electrical

Check to see if you get spark to your plug...that car (I believe) has independent coils so the number 3 might have failed. If you get good spark go to your auto parts store and borrow a compression tester and see how the compression reads, its easy to use just unscrew your spark plug and screw in the tester. If your compression is bad then I feel sorry for you. If spark and compression is good then a fuel injector would be the next step I would try....hate to tell you but my money is on the bad compression/bad rings/big money.

if you have a loud knocking sound then yes you might need a new engine or overhaul is probably better and might be cheaper but if its a misfire than it might be your valve its staying open or spark plug, spark plug wire or rotor or distributor.if its a valve you could get a valve job at a machine shop but they charge for each bad valve on my eclipse it was 15.00 dollars for each.
