None, some refer to it as video card, and others video adaptor, its even called graphics card, all mean the same thing, computer jargon that's all.

video cards are the same as video adapters,and are also known as graphic cards
video adapters was a name used in windows 98 days when graphic cards were not used so much for gaming,and were basically used to produce a image on the screen to use your p.c
as technology moved on,the name was then refered to as a video/graphic card and these were used in specific slots(a.g.p/pci-express)in your p.c
nowadays p.c,s even use 2 x graphic cards in s.l.i(scalable link interface)mode to produce excellent graphics in games,and nvidia are also experimenting with qaud cards(4 x graphic cards)but the drivers are apparently very hard to install
going full circle processors are becoming so powerfull these days that rumour has it that the graphic/video card is going to be replaced by the processor doing graphic calculations,this is because as processors use up to 4 cores then 1 of the cores can be specificly used for graphic rendering
this may see the end of the graphic/video card and will also see the end of such companies as nvidia and a.t.i

The same thing is the easy answer.
If you want to get technical I think you can say that a video card is on a separate board then the motherboard, where a video adapter can be part of the motherboard or on its own board.
