At what age did you remove your childs bumper pads and headof bed pad? My son is 10 months he does not try to climb out of the crib {that usually starts around 2 yrs of age} and my husband thinks it should come out says "he's a big boy now" but he is the type of baby that will push his head up to the rails and sleep with the rails {head of bed pad} touching his head and he is content. Move him to the middle of his bed and he goes right back up there. Also as much tossing he does in his sleep i'd hate for an arm to come out and him try to roll away while its in the rail. Any suggestions as to when it should come out?

Mine is 11 months old and still has them. My friend's baby is 15 months and still has hers. I decided to keep them until she is out of her crib. Every morning, I find her smushed into a side or corner of her crib. Apparently she likes cuddling with the bumpers. If I take them out, she would be against wood.
I am Ont worried about her trying to step on them. The are too soft and just squish (I tried with my hand). I feel the benefits outweigh the risks.

if you don't feel that there's any risk of him trying to use them to climb out you can leave them in for as long as you are comfortable, I know people that have them the entire time their child is in a crib. With my son, we had to take them out at 8 months because he's a little monkey and climbs up everything. He was like your son too though, he would sleep completely pressed against the corner so I though it was gonna be a problem. He never smacked his head against the rails, but he did get his legs caught between the bars a couple times, I freaked out, I was so scared he was gonna break his legs if he rolled over with a leg sticking out, but he'd just pull the back in the crib and be fine. He got totally use to it in about a week. I think babies are smarter than we give them credit for sometimes. Just make sure they come out whenever he starts climbing on them or if he ever figures out how to untie them.

I only used the bumper pad with my oldest daughter....I walked in one day when she was only 2 months old and found her head caught up underneath it and find them to be unsafe. My 2 1/2 year old is still in a crib and has never used a bumper pad and has absolutely no problems.

The reason that crib bumpers are not recommended is there is a theory that SIDS is caused by a carbon dioxide pocket from linen/clothing/stuffed animals being by a baby's face. If a baby moves in the crib and has their face by the crib bumper, or corner of the bed with a bumper on it, that can cause this carbon dioxide (exhaled by baby) to build up and cause the baby to stop breathing. When they started putting babies flat on their backs and got rid of loose clothing and blankets from cribs, the incidence of SIDS dropped dramatically. So, as cute as they are, please don't use them! SIDS risk seems to drop off about a year of age.

Another thing to have been found to reduce SIDS is to put a baby to bed with a pacifier. They don't know why, but it seems to work.

Hope this helps explain why they shouldn't be used. :)

I would keep the bumper pad in if your son is pushing himself into the top and sides of the crib. My son does that also, and I will leave it in there. By ten months they have figured out they need to breath, and there for should not suffocate themselfs.

Wow, I was just wondering the same thing. My baby girl is 10 months and my doctor told me at her 9 month check-up to take the bumpers out. But I felt the same way as you, so I have yet to remove them. My girlfriends have told me to leave them in as long as she's not trying to use them as a step to climb out. She stands up in her crib, but she's not climbing out. My baby lays on the bumpers as if they were pillows. I say leave them in until he starts using them as step-stools.

I didn't take the bumper out until my son used it as a step to try to climb out!

we still have our bumper pad in our daughters crib, and she is almost 22 months old. I don't think that their is any set age, just what you feel comfortable with.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that bumpers not be used at all for safety reasons. In short you should remove them now.
