My partner regularly builds tunes in reason
never heard him say that the quality of the track is affected by lack of ram.
Usually justs finds it hard to build more because of lack of space on a certain drive.

i you are sampling from digital the sound shouldn't deteriorate.
really it shouldn't deteriorate in analogue either but it used to be the case that when you looped analogue samples the sound to noise ratio would increase. I'd be surprised if that was the case with a G4 but may be worth looking into.

check the performance of your machine in real time- if the distortion is more of a hissing sound then that points towards the analogue suggestion. If the distortion is more like clipping/time jumps then you prob need to up your processor/ RAM
