It really depends on what your criterion is.
If you go for overall significance of pieces and their impact on the music of the time and the music to come, most would say Johann Sebastian Bach.
He is pretty much considered the grandfather of modern music, and his influence can be heard even today.

Well the most famous is Beethoven and then Mozart and then J.S. Bach. I like all three...to a point. But the best would have to be Beethoven, of course. Then behind would fall Mozart and then (in the same order) Bach. Chopin would come after this, although I think he's not too good. Beethoven is the master and changed music for ever. Who said Mozart, has the world gone mad?!!!!

Most people would probably say Mozart, Bach, or Beethoven. While I agree that all 3 are amazing composers, my personal favorite is Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. His Russian Easter Overture is amazing, as well as Scherazade.
