Most farmers I know drive defenders that *must* be more than 25 years old. One even drives a K-reg Honda Civic around the fields. No idea why he doesn't get it stuck.

No one should be allowed to have a 4x4 unless they're a farmer, they live at the end of a mile long unsurfaced track, they own a horse, donkeys, cattle sheep etc, or anything else heavy that needs towing (reluctantly that goes for caravans. Whereas you used to be able to tow a caravan with a saloon, they are now made so lightweight that they are too light to tow anymore).

Any idiot with a BMW, Merc, Volvo, etc etc etc 4x4 that has never seen mud and doesn't even have a tow bar (what is the point?) is just plain stupid. And it's not safer for the kids, just take a look at the safety statistics.

Living in the Countryside I can assure you that most 4X4s around here aren't driven by farmers. Some farmers might use Landrovers (real ones) or Subaru's but the certainly don't pose around in some of the more outlandish "lifestyle" vehicles.

Land Rovers etc are absolutely essential when you're a farmer, try driving across a muddy field in a Ford Escort!!!

What most people (including me) object to is people using them for the school run.

For farmers, yes, 4 x 4's are essential, but not for silly twee mothers dropping little children off at a suburban school nowhere near the countryside

i would say for farmers they are a NECESSITY. it 's all the ok yah brigade driving round in their 4x4's that send out the wrong message. farmers need them because they are often driving over countryside which doesn't have any roads.the "chelsea tractor" brigade just drive them so they can look superior and look down on the rest of us mere mortals!

Because they don't tend to be 4 x 4 tractors they tend to be 4 x 4 Mercs.
