Sovereignty is the right exercise political authority over a geographic area or people. In our case it would involve the three branches of gov't. It usually extends to 12 mi. out to sea as well as air space.

As an American it means that I have the right to elect my officials, debate and protest as I see fit and work to have politicians who represent my point of view on the local, state, and federal level.

Sovereignty refers to an area that legally and politically controls itself. It has nothing to do with democracy, or people having a 'say' in how things are done. The USA prides itself on being 'sovereign', or, that is to say, not politically or legally influenced by external forces. I'm not an American, so I can't say what it means in that context, but as a passport holder for Argentina, Canada and The EU, I can say that I resent the imposition of American pressure on the sovereignty of some of the countries I have lived in.

In the United States, the People are sovereign. This means a lot to me. It means the People are more important to this country that the government, the military, the Constitution, political parties, or anything else.
