both of my daughters were and had no problems. I am expecting another in May and hear it is not safe for a baby to be in utero that long.

Don't worry. 40 weeks is an estimate, and 90% of births take place 2 weeks before to 2 weeks after. The only reason it may bear watching would be if the baby is very large or if the placenta starts to deteriorate, which intereferes of course with the baby's nourishment. Your doctor will let you know if it's time to induce. If your babies were healthy, there was no problem.
