There is a guy who is really dear to me, but has a hard time finding confidence in himself. This makes it very difficult for him to go out and approach people to make friends. He used to do drugs and is now in a stage of recovery and cleanliness. He feels that he dosent know how to be social without using drugs first. I want him to be able to meet both men and women who are leading a clean lifestyle. Any advice on how to help him out??

Join clubs. There has to be something he likes to do, or is interested in, right? So you hunt up local clubs for those things. Yahoo has a tool that shows you local meetups for your town and I just met 8 new people of the same religous background as me last night. These people get together once a month to discuss the book they all agreed to read the last month. Just an example.

It's hard to meet new people when you're just going straight, I know. It's scary because you feel unsure if they'll like you. And for someone who's just cleaning up this will be the first time in a LONG time that they've had to deal with that anxiety. Just, for goodness sake, avoid the bars/parties scene for a while. That's all temptation and no real opportunity for new friendship.

The best way to get involved is to start to volunteer. It will help his self esteem also. Ask him what he is passionate about and he can volunteer and meet people that he has something in common with since the interest is already there. For example, I love interior and exterior plants and I volunteer at local parks in the spring for spring clean up and have met some really neat and cool people that has developed into great friendships.
