Because the commericial appeal of the thugs, money whores and clothes that the rap game have come up with.
I agree that todays rap game is mostly garbage and there are only a select few that are really talking about something.
I can remember the days of Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, Brand Nubian, De La Soul, Rakim, KRS-ONE.
And the other groups that are rapping about more that the crap that 's going on.
Nas, The Roots, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Lupe FIasco, Consequence, Slum Village, Strange Fruit Project, Little Brother, just to name a few.

All rap isn't like that. All rap doesn't suck either. Some artist think that they have to relate to the people who have/had it hard. The whole " ghetto" thing. They think that they are seeming like idols to people tryin to make themselves seem 'hard'. Most o rap artist aren't criminals. They pretend to be though. I don't y. But don't say it idolizes criminals though, cuz that's not true. That's an assumption. Don't assume.

Well to say that "Rap Sucks" is an unfair statement considering that there are those that can say "(insert favorite genre here) sucks". That being said, as a Hip-Hop / Rap Music Producer I will agree that there is Rap that really sucks.... bad... primarily due to the fact that it's been commercialized by the mainstream. And it's not just commercial rap... ALL COMMERCIALIZED MUSIC SUCKS DUDE!!!
and though this commercialized music does always suck, it's not the fault of the Artist.
The fact is, Society as a whole has shifted and wholesome values we were fed by our grandparents went out the window as soon as the paradigm shifted.... that's why uplifting stories almost NEVER open the first minutes of a newscast...
and that 's why said positive story is called a "Fluff Piece" as opposed to just being called "NEWS". Society has become so entranced by negativity in media that major record labels have are able to PRODUCE cookie-cutter "talent" that conforms to the stereotype of an inner city lifestyle and middle-white-america will eat it up...
I'm from the Ghetto.. like, the real one.. not the ones you see on MTV... and sadly, our kids in this neighborhood don't buy cd's... they dub them.... so SOMEBODY'S gotta be responsible for financing all this negativity...Don't blame it on the music.....blame the marketing....

Most mainstream rap is like that but there's other types of rap in the world.
For instance, I listen to a lot of Christian rap.
No idolization of criminals and no vulgar thoughts/words/etc.

There's also positive/Christian rap out there, such as Tunnel Rats, The Remnant, Ambassador, and The Cross Movement. I saw The Cross Movement in concert a few years ago... I *think* I was the only white female there.

Rap started as a good idea. It was about that lifestyle because thats the lifestyle that the original rappers were part of.
Then people started selling out and the record companies commercialized it.
When music is done for money and not music, it loses its true nature.

Eighty percent of rap is bought be suburban white kids. It puts some danger in their boring lives.
There is just no way a poor ghetto kid can afford a mp3 or cd player and all those rap cds.

Its the music for the ignorant. You want some real rap......the real rap was back from the 80's and sh!t. The rap of today makes no sense at all....and yet people still think that's..."GANGSTA!" Coming up with stupid slang like that.....goes to show you the damn ignorance I was talking about!

It's just mainstream rap that sucks.
There's obviously more to the genre than just what you hear on the radio.
