You should use the Windows Safe Mode - just before the Windows logo comes up (at bootup) hold down F8. A menu should appear. Select "Safe Mode with Networking", and then do whatever you need to do (AVG etc). If your computer freezes during Safe Mode, you need to re-install Windows.
