Duke Ellington's influence was that he was one of the first black musicians. in such a white business back then he defied the system with his creative and musically wonder full albums. but also gained a new found respect for black people uprising in the musical community in the 1920's.
Duke Ellington is my homeboy, he rocks you should really listen to some of him some time

Get your hands on the current copy of National Geographic - they have an article on the history of black music styles - it includes Duke Ellington.

Duke Ellington was a band leader. So I would say that he influenced changes in American music.
