My friend has a 1993 Honda Accord and it has a hole in the engine block. It passed smog a couple months ago, then he took it for an oil change... He noticed the oil would empty fast, but there were no wet spots on the ground... He put more oil in it, and after driving about 500 miles, it would be empty again. Does anyone know if this could have been a result to something that was done at the oil change place? It does have approx 200k miles on it, but has always been maintained. Plus the check engine or maintanence required lights never came on, the car never over heated or broke down... prior to getting the oil changed at this location. Thank you.

I would imagine the oil change place took a hammer and knocked a hole in the block so they could sell more oil!

If there is indeed a hole in the block, that is where the oil is going. Something internal as come loose in the engine and is trying to get out. It may be a rod, or the balance shaft.

The car can't be running properly.

The oil change place had nothing to do with the hole in the block.

The engine coolant most likely froze in the engine block, causing the block to expand and break. Check the antifreeze with a tester. If it does not read under 140 below zero your friend is in cold water. One thing puzzles me. If the coolant froze some freeze plugs would have popped out of the block.

Exactly where is the hole in the block. Is there an oil streak coming from the hole in the block? Start checking stuff is the filter dry if not some idiot didn't remove the old gasket before putting the new filter on Look at this NOW. Be sure the pan gaskets are not leaking or the pan drain plug may be loose. Oil filters only leak with the engine turned on.

It sounds like a head gasket. If it is then the exhaust will be a thick white smoke. If is anything other than a gasket though I doubt it would be worth fixing on a '93 Honda with that many miles.

check oil pan plug for tightness, valve cover gaskets, oil blow all over the engine.
If is is certain knowledge there indeed a hole in the engine block, get another engine

He threw a rod. It's not fixable. It can happen if you get too low on oil.
If your friend drove it until the oil was gone knowing it had a bad leak, he got what he deserved.
