My daughter owns a ball python. she hates rodnets so instead of live ones she brings her snake the frozen ones. The snake eats them without hesitation.

My question: how do they die before they are frozen. Do they go in some sort of gas chamber? are they fed some sort of poison?

anyone know? just curious

well we freeze the pinkies ( babies ), the head boss will break their necks, same with rats and mice and that is honestly the most humane way. we don't freeze them alive. i don't have the heart to kill them, so i let her do it. suffocating and drowning...wow...thats cruel. oh and how would you like to be wacked onto a table...assume you are dead, are still in a daze and then froze. thats one of the worst ways. our old manager used to be the strongest guy and he'd try doing that and he had to wack them a couple times until they are dead and the noses started bleading. breaking necks really is the most quick and painless way...they die on the spot...and you dont have to wack them a couple times in the process. either way. i hate freezing mice or rats. snakes should be raised on live mice...and people who have snakes should've sucked up the guts to feed them what they eat in the wild...

I worked in a zoo and got live rats donated to us. We drowned ours. It sounds terrible, but that way, there was no toxins in the rats' bodies that could harm our snakes. I have heard of rat retailers using gas chambers, though. I'd ask your pet supply store. If they don't know, ask them to find out. You have the right to know where your pet's food is from and if there are any potential toxins in the rats.
As an after thought, make sure your daughter is thawing the rats out to room temp before feeding them to her snake. And never thaw them in the microwave. They heat up faster on the inside and can cause serious burns to your snake. Just put them in a tupperware tub on the counter until they feel neither warm nor cold to your touch. Then Bon Apetite!

Im not really sure how they kill the mice but I can definately tell you its not poison or bait. The bait would still be in the mouse system and the snake would die after eating the mouse

CO2. Carbon dioxide basically puts the animal to sleep and it suffocates. Humane, effective, and the CO2 isn't harmful to the snakes.

No, if they poisen the mouse, then they are basically poisening the snake too, what most of them do is just grab the mouse by the tail, and very quickly smash its head against the corner of a table....sounds very mean and inhumane, but its the MOST humane way to do it, the mouse dies instantly and feels no pain

Pinkies are frozen alive. It's pretty inhumane, but I guess it is better than being swallowed alive.
