I've been contracted to pencil and ink a 24 page one shot. It's a mystery/noir story, and the target audience is women 24-35. Does anyone have any suggestions of books that are popular with a female audience? I'm trying to see what styles of art are best resonating with women. The publisher isn't looking for an anime style, so that's out, but there has to be other stuff that maintains a good popularity among women. I know SiP and Love & Rockets. Anything else?

PS - this isn't a debate about whether or not it's worth the effort to make comics for a female audience. I'm not the one making that decision, I'm just the hired artist. All I'm looking for is some art styles that women like looking at. ;)

Thanks,

-Jeff

Err, 18-35 is the target age range, not 24-35. And though I'm thankful for the anime based suggestions (Sailor Moon, et al), I already suggested this direction to the publisher and he's pretty firm that it's not the direction he cares to go in. Keep the answers coming, though, this is great!

I know a number of the old CrossGen comics had a high feminine following; they were well-drawn and had a lot of strong female characters.
Me, I liked the old Excalibur comics with Claremont & Davis, Elfquest by the Pinis, Castle Waiting by Medley, and a lot of the CrossGen stuff, esp. with art by Guice & Land. Very smooth, and some is almost realistic.
Like bonzillatron said above, it does depend on the story--does it suit both the genre as well as the writing style?

I love comics. My favorite artists would have to be J. Scott Campbell (DangerGirl, Gen 13). I'm also a big fan of Michael Turner (Witchblade, The Darkness). Comics with an art style similar to this are one's I'm more inclined to pick up. The style you choose is really dependant on what the story line is like. You don't want something to cartoon if the story is a serious one and visa versa. I hope this helps. Good luck! ^_^

Perhaps do something like Sailor Moon or Tokyo Mew Mew, only a little more 'American?' My favorite art style is probably Sailor Moon, Absoulute Boyfriend, Backstage Prince, and NANA. I know these are all anime/manga.........by the way, these are all very popular with a lot of girls. Hope this helps!

God Bless!

Mmmm . . . I know anime like "Sailor Moon" are very popular with girls and young women. Perhaps you could do something like Sailor Moon, with a team of female superheros with magical superpowers and one male (love interest of at least one of them) assisting them, only retool it so it is somewhat more American? There have been similar American-made animated series along this vein, so it could work.

The only comics I really paid attention to were from CrossGen. Too bad they're done, but I loved Sojourn mainly, plus a few others. I think my favorites were from Greg Land.

Good luck!
