Looks a bit like a clash of egos between Branson and Murdoch. Sky has been pretty much competition free in the UK for years and seems that Murdoch sees Virgin Media as a genuine threat to his monopoly and was charging a ridiculous amount for the right to use certain Sky channels. Surely this is in an aim to cripple or control the growth of Virgin Media and not a part of a business model. Branson has a history of making well-established companies nervous, especially with his fights with BA.

Branson wants to be Murdock without the ruthless edge and Murdock doesn't want him to be. So he does his best to hit Branson financially.
Why are Sky charging so much money? If ITV and BBC had charged the sort of money compared to the quality of the programs, they would be ten times the price of SKY channels and we wouldn't have 20 minutes of adverts an hour and have to pay for the service too. We pay more money for TV programs in this country than anywhere in the world, and that's purely down to Murdock.
Boy are we stupid over here.

It was time for Virgin to renew their contract with sky for sky one etc and sky wanted to put the price up by 100% but virgin were only willing to pay up to a 30% rise.
personally i think sky are just being plain greedy! I'm sticking with virgin and i can get the shows i miss on dvd, so there, Murdock!

well, virgin, the cable company were not happy with the contract between Sky and them, so they had a long talk and the contract was canceled. so now the paying customers of cable no longer get Sky 1 and other Sky channels because of the row.
